Just a note to thank Mr. Clayton for his endorsement of Libertarian Ed Clark for President. All of us libertyloving bikers will be forever grateful. Incidentally, anyone who is considering voting Libertarian and needs more information can write me at 5368 Willowick Dr., Anaheim. CA 92807. I'll send you a free copy of Clark's book, A New Beginning. Only 100 copies are available, so hurry. Thanks again, CN. Every little bit helps. WALTER BALER Anaheim, CA Heroes Maybe I'm silly or just soft-headed. Undoubtedly. I'm a hopeless romantic, but I love the valiant gesture in the face of overwhelming odds. David slaying Goliath. Leonidas defe-nding the pass at Thermopylae. The American commander answering "Nuts" to the German commander's demand for surrender during the Battle of the Bulge. Anytime a "little guy" would rather die in his tracks than knuckle under to a "big guy." I root for him. Obviously. this is one reason I've supported the Phantom Duck. Louis McKey's deeds are the very embodiment of the American spirit, the stuff of which folk heroes are made. Many consider the Duck's actions valiant, but useless. Rather like the mouse. in its last moment of life. "flipping-off" tbe hawk.. I ask these people to take a closer look. This time the mouse is holding aloft not a bony middle finger, but a bitter steel spike. Our "hawk" is about to become a chicken dinner. To the point. The Bureau of Land Management, in its blind rush to steal our public lands and deny us our rights. has committed many errors. The Bureau has violated federal laws and policies. The Bureau has acted in an unfair and prejudiced manner toward many. The Bureau has ignored the wishes and needs of the users of the desert. The Bureau has lied to us. The Bureau, in its might, feels that it can act in any manner it chooses and that none can stop it. The Bureau is in error. The "mouse" is about to strike the "hawk" frOm the sky. Louis McKey is goin~ to coun. It has taken a long time, but all is now ready. Many have worked. long and hard, for this moment. Much evidence and documentation has been gathered. The time to act is now. Your help is desperately needed. We need money. Money. not only for the Duck's lawsuit, but also to force a spike into the foul heart of the "desert plan," to force a federal investigation and to delve further into the evil deeds being done in the name of conservation. CORVA offers you an opportunity to become involved and to aid the fight. Under COR VA's "Help the Duck: Join CORVA" program, you can give $5.00 to aid the Duck. help CORVA fund its programs and investigations. and become a member of CORVA. (For more information call 714/685·0286 or write CORVA. P.O. Box 251. Mira Lorna, CA 91752.) Few have Louis McKey's guts and determination. Few are willing to go into jeopardy because they believe they are right. Few can be heroes. But all of us can make sure that the "spike" is sharp and bites deep. THUMPER FREAK 213/862-3975 P.S. On Nov. 29 I will be near Barstow. It is the best place to "flip· off' the "hawk." Where will you be? Duck update The Phantom Duck of the Desert has filed suit in Federal Coun alleging that the U.S. Dept. of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management has discriminated against, been prejudiced towards, and generally has engaged in ha rassment of desen oriented vehicle enthusiast. The BLM, who have been beaten by the Duck in all previous coun appearances, and who had called and said that they would concede this latest case and settle out of coun, have now reversed themselves and taken a we· will-fight·to·the·death attitude. They know the Duck has limited funds, and that court cases are expensive, so no doubt their intentions are to spend a lot of' our tax dollars in an attempt to prevent the Duck from publicly airing the dirty laundry of some top level BLM officials and prevent us from putting the Desen Plan in its proper perspective by exposing any liars, cheats and thieves involved with its creation, and to prevent us from also exposing thOle who would sell their mother for a dime if they thought it would move them up the bureaucratic ladder, In the past, many individuals and some organizations have rallied behind the Duck in an effon to satisfy the need for legal fees necessary to defeat the BLM in coun, but few organizations have put fonh the level of effon recently displayed by CORVA, the California Off Road Vehicle Association. In letters and ads placed in Cycle News, Dirt Explosion, and othe~ publications, CORVA has offered the Phantom Duck Legal Defense Fund $5 for each new $15 individual or family membership they received between Sept. 15, 1980. and November 29, 1980. I wish to express my smcere gratitude for the effons of thi's CORVA program. and to the officey; and members who have made It possible. CORVA has a ~ood aggressl~e program concerning outdoor recreation rights, and they have leadership that won't back down from- a knock-down, drag-out fight to protect those rights. CORVA's number is 213/862-3975, and for all you people who have been looking for an organization to represent your recreational needs and fight for your legal rights I highly recommend CO RVA membership now as a means of helping yourself and supporting the Duck cause at the same time. Because of the significance some people may associate with the time and location of CORVA's presentation of funds to the Phantom Duck, (Thanksgiving weekend, Saturaay November 29, 1980, somewhere near Barstow, CA), and because of my previously announced intention to travel from Barstow to Vegas on that weekend per invitation from BLM State Director Jim Ruch, I would liie to again make my position clear on public land use, including use of th~ desert. Even though I don't feel I have violated any desert use laws in the past, I do feel that illegal events should be actively discouraged and I wou'd hope that all desen users would ride safely, ride legally, and obey all the rules and regulations pertaining to the area of your choice. Please stay legal, and remembt"r that COCA District Manager Gerald E. Hillier will not defend our rights to desen use as he defended and partici· pated in the paid entry Sierra Club off-road vehicle event of March 23. 1980 that was run in the desert without a permit. . For more information, please send a SASE to P.D.O.D., P.O. Box 1723. Fontana, CA 92335. A large portion of my time is spent in preparing evidence to be used against the BLM in coun, and I do appreciate any documented materia you may have that relates even remotely to the BLM. Even newspapt'T'anicles relating to desert use are help' ful, hopefully with the date and source identified. I am not able to give all my supporters a personal response, but I do appreciate the opportunity you~ past and present support has given me to fight for OUT rights. LOUIS H. McKEY President, The Phamtom Duck Qf the Desen Fontana, CA: Published letters do not neces· sarily reflect the position of Cycle News, Inc, Send letters to Voices, Box 498. Long Beach, CA90801.
