SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT, 21
(j)
Danny Cannon, a 250cc Novice,
and his Maico moved in to the
DeAnza point lead last Sunday
with only one race left in the
quarter trophy series. Fred Combs,
who rides 250cc Pro class. has held the
lead almost throughout the year, but
will have one more chance at regaining
the lead next week when Cannon will
be moving up to the Intennediate class.
" Cannon's last Novice ride held a
close duel against Yamaha' mounted
,Calvin Utterback (Yam). Cannon got
(a so-so start in round one, but before
Jong both he and Utterback had jumped
into the lead. Joe Kleager (Yam) was
third all the way.
,
In the second race the Cannonl
Utterback match was at its best.
ytterback led with Cannon hounding
his tracks until the halfway point when
1the Maico pilot finally found a line
into the lead. But even then the race
was far from over. Utterback made
several attempts to regain the lead,
jbut it was still Cannon across the line.
tThird place went to Klaeger once
!again after a long dice with Randy
Semics (Han).
An even cioser race was in the I25cc
Novice ranks where Kit Palmer (Suz),
~art Onash (Suz) and Tony Dejulio
.,Kaw) wound up in a three-way tie for
·the overall. Onash led the first mota
from flag to flag over an extremely
close Dejulio while Palmer worked up
to third from a last place start. They
ii.nished I·2·~ over Rusty Tafhnger
(Yam) and Mike Maharin (Yam).
In the next race, Onash, Dejulio
and Palmer were on top again right off
the bat. But Onash and Palmer both
went down after a few laps, giving
Dejulio a strong lead. Then it was
Dejulio's turn to eat it, putting Palmer
on top. Onash came up behind second
place Dejulio in the late laps. but was
unable to make a pass. They finished
like that and because the second mota
is always the tie· breaker at DeAnza,
Pahner got the overall win over Dejulio
and Onash.
In the Veterans Senior class, Yamaha
of Redlands rider Paul Wilde finally
got an overdue win,
topping
. acknowledged Vets class king Ron
Brehm (Yam) in the second mota.
William Cline (Hus) topped the Junior
,.Iass with Bill Mitchell (Yam) trading
wins for second.
