II Southern Callfornla.Arlzona-Southern Nevada· Southern Callfornla·Arlzona·Southern Nevada· Southern Ca1lfornla·Arlso 1:1 Western hotline Storer stomps NMAlSuzuld fall series round By Tom Corley SAN DIEGO, CA, SEPT. 21 LC') 1"""4 ~ "'" ..c ·0 .... U o The normal Sunday crowd at Barona Oaks was multiplied several times by the visiting National Motosports Association racers who traveled from all over for the race. This race, the second in the NMA Suzuki Fall Nationals Series. was run by t~ California Mini Motorcycle Club, who made sure that everything ran smooth the whole day. Two classes were completely controlled by Chris Lara. Lara clobbered the Junior Cycle Modified Novices ahead of Shane Sheffield, Richard Hunter and "Mad Matt" Foster. Then Lara went and won the Junior Cycle Stock Novice race and was almost as successful except that he lost the final moto to Steve Hale. Overall it was Lara, Steve Hale, Hunter and Taylor Martin. Scott Brown was another two time winner. Brown flew on his Suzuki and won three out of four motos. In the Junior Cycle 9-11 Stock Intermediate race Brown lost the final moto to Yamaha's Mouse McCoy. On the final results it ended up Brown, McCoy, Space Schriner and BradJohnson. In the Stock race it was very even between Brown and McCoy. In the Junior Cycle 9-11 Modified race it was a different story. McCoy was racing a stock bike in this race because his new Modified bike wasn't in yet. This is how they placed overall; Brown, Brad Johnson, Mouse McCoy and Shaun Kalos. Sam Storer won five out of six mOlOS that he entered today. He won all but the 83cc 12 and over Stock Expert class. Ron Lechien took the honors in that class but Storer won the 83cc 12 and over Modified Expert race and also the 105cc event. Sam won the Modified event by just a little bit ahead of Troy Blake. The final moto was very exciting when Blake hit the ground before the finish line but got it going again for a sure second .. The motorcycle racing was just as excellent as the Mini competition was. Charles Osterday won the 100cc race over Darin Rogers and Charles Harries. In the 125cc Stock Novice class Doug O'Donnell was the winner and Joe Rincon edged out O'Donnell in the 125cc Modified Novice class. Vince McMahon picked up two wins with firsts in the 125cc Stock and Modified Intermediate classes. David McGhee is one rider who doesn't have to go far to race at Barona. He lives in the city of Ramona. McGhee won both the 125cc Stock and Modified Expert races. He almost didn't win the last moto of the Modified race because he pulled off the track with one lap still left to go! Results PEE WEE STOCK: 1. K;ng Richard (ltal; 2. Joseph Lane (SulI; 3. Jannings, Kline captureAME nightMX By Judy Greenberg Photo by Bob Greenberg VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 21 It was a night of back to back wins for Andy ]annings, Bob Kline and Steve Schmitz in the 500, 250 and 125cc Pro ranks with American Motocross Enterprises at Indian Dunes. In the fLrst 500cc moto, Track N Travel's Jannings left the gate with the Bakersfield Yamaha of Darren Oliver, the Kolbe Can-Am of Joe Root and Kirk Sturgeon's O'Neal/International Yamaha in lOw. Sturgeon's first lap bike trouble squelched his chances for a move and all positions held to the wire. Jannings quickly grabbed Oliver's lead away in the second round, with riders strung out to repeat their first moto fi nishes. Kal-Gard/Yamaha support rider Kline was first off the line in the 250cc Pros, being hounded by the International Yamaha of Mike Shoemaker and Rob Tolleson (Duralube/Lancaster Yam). As Kline pulled away to stretch his lead, the battle for second heightened. At the halfway point Tolleson closed on Shoemaker but went down, falling into fourth behind Dwayne Brothers. Shoemaker finished a consistent second with Tolleson back into third and Rob Peeples fourth. Tolleson led the second gate for two laps until Kline made his pass and w~s off to his second win for the night. Shoemaker closed on Tolleson and kept the heat on, but both riders were without error, taking the flag in a tight finish. Rob Peeples reeled in fourth. A controlled Schmitz '(Int./Yam. support) shot off the line in charge of the 125cc Pros to take the first moto win. Mark Bledsoe (Bakersfield Yam.), the Simi Honda of Jim Simons, Jerry Shore (Honda support) and David Lynch (Works Performance) rounded out the top five. Shore slipped into third when Simons went down and placed behind Lynch. The second time, Simons holes hot and rode furiously to defend his lead from an aggressive Schmitz. Bledsoe had Shore on his tail and eventually submitted 10 his pressure and fell back to fifth. The Simons/Schmitz battle ran from the pack and continued 10 the last lap when Schmitz made his move for the win. Shore brought in a strong third, with Lynch and Bledsoe tight for fourth. Back to back wins were prevalent in Intermediate action as well. In the 125s, Jack Greenberg packed away his Suzukis. going wire to wire both times out on a Kal-Gard/Bob Kline Honda. The Kolbe Honda of John Biffle was his only contender the first time, finishing second over the Hondas of Bob Byrne and Dave Calais. With Greenberg off with a strong lead in the second' round, Harold Smith won his bid for second from Biffle, with Byrne taking fourth in front of Paul Wolfe. For the 250s, Kent Bartels' Scotts of Montrose Honda took it all followed by Mike Sperry with a pair of seconds and Jeff Jones swapping third with Doug Russell. Results 500 PRO: 1. McCullough masters Saguaro AMAMX By Nancy Keyes TUCSON, AZ, SEPT. 20 A beautiful warm evening brought many people out to see what was scheduled to be our last night race of the season. After a vote at the riders' meeting it was decided to go one more night before going to days. The 125cc Experts and Juniors were run together with a split start. Todd Mueller took the number one spot for the Experts with Buddy Thomison and David King not far behind. King took over second behind Sunshine while Thomison laid it over entering the valley, giving third to McClusky. King grabbed first going up Sunshine Hill and McClusky went down in the wall berm. David King rode out the first spot with Tibbs McCullough, having gotten a flat on the start, working his way by Mueller to come in second. Mike Goodrich worked his way to third. The second molO Goodrich shot out ahead of McCullough with Thomison and Mueller right behind. Goodrich and McCullough pulled a good lead with McCullough catching Goodrich many times but not being able to get by. He finally got his chance in the wall berm and went on to get first overall. Jorge Saba, from Obregon, Mexico, pulled the holeshot in the 125cc Junior class with Joe Petruska close behind soon to take over the lead with Pat Eggman taking second. Eggman managed to get by going up Sunshine only to lose it again to Petruska in the berm at the bottom of the hill. Petruska grabbed .the lead in the second moto and held it until the last lap when Eggman passed him going up Sunshine al{ain. Results MINI BEG: 1. Chris Baker (Vam); 2. Craig Nietsen (Yam): 3. Lunde tops 250cc Pro clash at SSM By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 20 The tightest and closest action seen on the Saddleback International track in many months, took place this week at the SSM MX. With five and sometimes six different 250cc Pros running handlebar to handlebar for both motos the battle for the overall victory went right down to the wire. Suzuki motocross school instruct9r Bob Elliott jumped into the early lead of the first moto, tailed by Kawasaki rider Robert Reisinger and Hondamounted Tony Gomez. Completing the first lap a split second behind the top three was Yamaha rider Kurt Sorka followed by Vere Butler and Tim Lunde. both also riding the yellow and black YZS. Gomez found a few extra ponies as the second lap began and blasted from his third place position into first. Reisinger dropped to fourth as Sorka powered up to challenge Elliott for second. Yamaha rider Steve Banning displaced Butler on lap five as the race for the checkers became a six rider battle. The next few laps were a nightmare for pit crews and scorers as Lunde, Sorka and Reisinger traded positions with every go-'round. Gomez looked safe in the lead as he opened up a 10second cushion over second place Elliott at the midway point. Near the end of the moto Gomez began to slow as his engine swallowed a set of rings and the former CMC Number One tried valiantly to hold off the pack. In the final laps Lunde put away the cha1lenl{es of Sorka and Reisinger and charged past Elliott. With the white flag out Lunde inched past Gomez for the win. Gomez took second ahead of Elliott, Sorka and Banning with Reisinger falling hard and remounting to finish eighth. Gomez was unable to fix his motor between mOlOS and the other riders took to the field glad for one less challenger. Elliott broke into the lead on lap one with Sorka pushing from behind. Reisinger followed in third ahead of Yamaha rider Tibor Papp, Lunde and Banning. Sorka slipped around Elliott on lap two and Reisinger dropped the Suzuki rider another slot on the next lap. Lunde moved past Papp and pressured Elliott for six circuits before moving into third, Sorka continued to lead with Reisinger glued to his rear fender as the moto neared the end. Lunde slipped off the pace and allowed Elliott and Banning to charge past as Papp slowed slightly with mechanical problems.
