Yamaha's Bob Hannah was back in form with a come·from·the-back ride in molO one which took him to the win, but a second moto fifth held the Hurricane to second overall. Second moto winner, Kawasaki's .teff Ward placed 12th in molO one and was relegated to fifth overall. The same bailie that set up in the past season's 125cc Nationals looks to be shaping up again. Mark Barnell's 2· 7 day put him in a tie with Glover for the International class lead' with 83 points. "I can't seem 10 shake Barnetl. He's been on my tail for a few years' now," said·Glover. Kawasaki support rider David Bailey also put consistent riding to good use The day was marred by the first turn collision of many riders at the start of the second Support class moto. Many ri.ders headed back to the pits with cuts and bruises, but a few were more seriously injured, LOP's Mike Brown, the Support winner at Mid· Ohio the week before, suffered lOrn ligaments in his right leg which will require surgery. Kawasaki's Tom Benolkin broke his right wrisl. The most seriously injured rider was Yamaha supported John Day, Day remains in intensive care in Memorial Hospital in SI. Joseph, Michigan, in serious condition. "I wouldn't call him completely stable," said a hospital spokesperson at presstime. "He's awake and drowsy, and he's not going backwards." Racing was delayed for two hours while available ambulances and the track doctor went 10 the hospital with the injured. International Mark Barnell set his sights on the first turn as the gate dropped for moto one, and he got there first with his works Suzuki Floater, Honda's Steve Wise, Bob Hannah on his factory Yamaha, Broc Glover and teammate Mike Bell followed, Barnell started to move away from the pack while Wise and Glover tightened it up. Glover won out and Hannah soon came along behind for third. Glover picked up his pace a few laps later and started to check out Barnell'S lines. A mechanical snake consisting of Hannah, Wise, Honda's Jim Gibson and Chuck Sun, Yamaha's Marty Tripes and Bell pursued the leaders. Hannah then went into overdrive and was soon only a straightaway behind Glover. Hannah soon stuck his from knobby next to Glover's amidst the crowd's.wild approval. Hurricane then blew past Glover and headed for Barnell. • The skirmish soon tightene'd, and real motocross racing was in the making 'as Hannah took Barnett, then Barnell dial it on and stayed only feet behind. Barnell is a local favorite anq many were giving him the thumbs-up sign. It came down to the line wit~ Hannah winning by fee followed by, Barnell, Glover and Wise, while Tripes and current Trans-USA champ Kent Howerton slid by Gibson for the 5-6 SIOlS. Bell, Honda's Donnie Hansen and Suzuki's Darrell Shultz were next. "I think he got by me once and I got him back," said Hannah in the pits, "It was just a real close one." "He (Hannah) got a little squirrelly in a rut and I almost got by. It was close. I wish I could have ridden in second for most of the race. It's easier that way," said Barnetl. Sun fell back after busting through a berm and crashing, and Marty Smith wouldn't make the second moto. He had flipped over the bars after hilling someone in corner one at the start, and suffered a possible broken right hand. Marty went to the docror instead of risking further injury, Barnell again claimed the holeshot honors in moto two. A pile-up after the dropaway jump stalled Tripes, Bell and others. It wasn't long befo~ Glover went into the lead, Hannah was running about 10th. Wise came around a lap down. Gibson inherited second, and Jeff Ward moved past Barnett, but not without having to work for it, Sun, Suzuki's Howerton and Hannah were
