next with Hansen and Tripes volleying
for seventh. Dave Hollis was in ninth
and on his way to top privateer for the
day.
Glover had held a five-second lead,
but a few laps later it was Glover, Gib·
son and Ward in contention for the
front runner's spot. Ward moved to
second and Howerton put a move on
Gibson for third. Sun had fifth taken
away when Hannah got inside on a
corner.
Late in the race, Donnie Cantaloupi
nipped his bike on top of himself in
the !ligh section sweeper, allowing
Tripes to skate around him for ninth.
Ward again showed himself capable
of winning as he cut tight lines to the
checkers to win, followed by Glover,
Howerton, Gibson, Hannah and Sun.
Bell had been moving up but a rock
in the face stopped his charge, and
Gaylon Mosier had problems with a
seat that wouldn't stay on his bike.
"This is the series egeryone's been
waiting for in the last four or five years.
Everyone's on the 250's. I think this
series is great," said Glover to announcer
Larry Maiers after it was over.

Support
David Bailey holeshot the first Support moto, but a resJart was called due
to gate problems. The second time out
Keystone's Troy Bradshaw took the
lead with Bentley and LOP's Jeff
Surwall in tow. Bentley soon took over'
in front. Many thougbt that 16-yearold Bentley wouldn't have the experience or strength to pace to the finish,
but he proved them wrong. He went
all the way to the checkers for the win.
LOP's Kippy Pierce moved into second,
!lot after another win after his MidOhio second moto victory. Suzuki's
Scon Burnworth took fourth .followed
by Bailey.
Pierce picked up his pace and went
after Bentley and Bailey checked out
Bradshaw's lines and got by for third.
Tben Bentley stalled his bike, but got
going feet ahead of Pierce.
Bentley and Pierce battled down to
the wire, with both riders resorting to
different lines in attempts to block or
Pi'ss. Bentley showed his stuff and took
th win with Pierce close by. Bailey,
Burnworth, Kawasaki's Tom Benolkin
- who came from the back - and
David Taylor of LOP followed. Husky's
Mike Guerra came up for seventh with
Bra~ha~ shadowing. '
.
"I got a cramp in my side arid I still
have a stomacllache.1 just tried to keep
my pace and my head straight. It
really helps when people cbeer you
on," said Bentley, who calls Perry,
Michigan, home,
The start of moto two looked good
until the pack was into corner one. An
unidentified bike went sideways in the
middle of the pack, and the next instant
bikes and riders were flying everywhere.
When the dust cleared John Day lay,
unconscious on the track. Mike
Brown, Benolkin, Taylor, Bentley and
many others were scattered and dazed
checking out their injuries. The red
nag was brought out when riders
-couldn't be cleared from the track in
time for the pack to come around in
safety.
"Lt happened so quick," said
Bentley. "I went down and the next
thing I knew I was picking up a
Yamaha'"
The International class was run before the Support class, as AMA officials
waJ;lted to make sure the International
ciass.got two full motos in before du~\<.
As it turned out there was time for all
motos to run in their entirety,
Bentley edged Ron Sun at the restart,
bUl Sun wanted a win badly after
fouling a plug in moto one. He ran to
tbe front and stayed there. Bailey and
Pierce were in the 3-4 places. Bentley
faded due to a very sore toe incurred in
the crash, and LOP's Mark Lawrence
(Top) Bob Hannah won the first moto and could garner only fifth in the second giving him second overall. Third went
to last week's winner Barnett (above) who beat Glover to the checkers in moto one.
took second. Lawrence stayed there
for a long time but faded in tlie last
few laps.
All Bailey had to do to claim the
overall was stay in front of Pierce and
take second, and he did just that.
Lawrence locked onto fourth, and
Maico support rider Alan King put in
a strong ride for fifth. Burnworth was
close in sixth and CSM's Darren
Rhoten was nex t.
"My rear brake stuck the whole
moto," said Bailey. "I snubbed the
motor twice. At least I finally took a
big time overall."
