TEN YEARS AGO . The 1970 Inter· Am motocross series began with two events held on the same day. In Copetown in Canada, Tonten Hallman led a 1-2 Husky sweep as Gunnar Lindatrom placed second in front of Maico-mounted Willi Bauer. In Elkhorn. WI. Husky's Bengt Aberg took advantage of Ale JonllOn's mechanical troubles in one of the motos to score the overall win with Jonsson placing second. CZ· , mounted John DeSoto was top American at fifth overall. The AMA's Grand National Championship Series wound up with an Oklahoma Gity half mile. Mark Brelsford (H·D) took his only National win of the year as he led new Champ Gene Romero (Tri) from stan to finish. Dave Aldana finished third in front of Dick Mann and Don Castro. The AFM held a road race at Orange County International Raceway, and John McGillivray stole the show in the big-bore classes on Kerker-Nonon equipment. The 125 and 250cc GP classes werf' dominated by Ron Pierce's Yamahas. but in the !l50cc GP event his bike blew up on the last lap 'while in the lead and the win went to Jimmy Chen. 00 I-< CIJ ..0 o ..... u 22nd. Larry Shaw topped the Handicap feature. Riding in suit and tie. Wilu Wagner was the Expen class winner at an observed trials meet in Colorado hosted by the Rocky Mountain Trials Association. The Firebird 100 desert race in Jericho. UT. went to Preston Gerber. After leading at the start of the second loop. Gene Chrisriamen settled for second in. front of Don Fuller. Carl Cranke captured the 125 and 250cc Senior classes, with the Open Senior class being announced as a tie between Phil Jacobson and Boh GJ'OIIi. The Bureau of Land Management and the County of San Bernardino squared off. with the county enacting an ordinance requiring written _per· mission to ride on any public or private land, and the BLM challenging the county's jurisdiction on BLM-managed lands. A presstime bulletin announced that the affair had been settled. and written permission was not necessary to ride on BLM lands.
