AmateurMX . ualifier q By Richard Thompson OLYMPIA, WA, AUG . 10 Nearly 200 riders turned out at the Thurston-Grays Harbor ORV . Park for the AMA/Suzuki National Amateur' Motocross 40 Qualifier. The top I g riders in the 100, 125, 250 and Open A classes now have the opponunity to move on to the Regional in Dixon, CA , on September 14 and if they qualify, on to the Nationals in Minnesota to become National number one in their class on October 4-5. . U.S. Suzuki provided gift certificates to the top three Suzuki riders in the 100, 125, 250 and Open A classes. They will do the same at the Regional, but at the final, the winners of each class will receive a.Suzuki RM . Phil Larson and Rob Manning put on excellent shows in the Pro classes. Riding for Hi -Point, Larson showed his experience from the Nationals by totally dominating the 250 and Open Pro races. Manning on a Honda aced both 125cc Pro motes, but had to . settle for second in each 250cc round behind "Fast" Phil. Jeff Chapman, riding for Paulson's, won the 100A and finished th ird in 125A , picking up $125 in certificates from Suzuki . Don Gores of Port Angeles, riding for Olympia Yamaha, aced the 125A class. Bellevue Suzuki put riders one, two, three in the 250A -: Rodney Casper, Ted Hold and Brad Ellis. Steven Miller on a Yamaha took the checkered in the Open A, but Ma ico Mania of Yakima riders, Rick Lago and Doug Hafsos , were second and th ird. Kurt Howland picked up a new 125 in Los Angeles, CA, at the Superbowl of Motocross from Motocross Action magazine and tried it out in the 125B class, but had mechanical problems in the last moto. He did pick up a win in the 100B , though. The Mini A and B classes were won by Steve Oste r and Wade Janssen respectively. Mike Larson of the motocross-happy Larson family won both 125B motos, Todd Beltz won 250B and Bob Johnson took the Open B win . Good luck to these young men in the • Regionals and Nationals. Also, thanks to the volunteers from the Shelton Trailblazers, Black Hills Dirt Riders, Mt . s.. Helens M.C. , Tacoma M.C ., Shoreline Lions and Peninsula Sidehack Club for making this event run properly. .!Vlagoo, Staten, Hardick steal CMC Bosch series round t hree By Greg "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO , CA , AUG, 10 Danny " Mago ' Chandler was nothing short of outstanding as he won the overall in 125cc Pro competition in the third round of the CMC Pacific Championship Series at Prairie City OHV Park, site of the Hangtown National Motocross Classic. The Hangtown track (known as the "Brad Lackey track") was used for the first time since the March classic and the track's hard surface was evidence that the county (the property's owners) neglected to prepare the track that has turned to cement after four months of baking in the sun. Gary Lewis of No- . Names Promotions spe nt severa l days trying to get it back to a respectabl e level, though the 100· temperatures helped no more than the county , Suzuki -mounted Clint Ha rd ick won both motos of the Open Pro class, com , ing from second, place starts and then pulling away onc e out front . Steve Walker holeshot the first moto on his Yamaha and then served as a buffer for a couple laps for Hardick aft er being pa ssed. Yamaha rider Dave Wood an d Danny Turner on the Bill Harrison Cons truction Maico were soon a round, also. Turner went down in a tum and Suzuki's Ron Turner (no relation) came roosti ng around in fourth gear. The two T urners , who lived together in Anaheim at one time, had somewhat of a "family" reunion as the y "kissed" in th e corne r, Neither was able to con tinue because their bikes were a littl e bent. Bill Grossi was rid ing a BP Racing Pro -Tee Yamaha four-stroke and fell on lap three while in fourth, dropping to eighth. It wasn't long until he was back in fourth behind Wood's Yamaha , though. Grossi worked on Wood and almos t made it around, but his front hub cracked and he had to settle for fourth at the checkered . Hardick stalled as he started down a tricky off-camber hill , but wasn't de layed enough for Yamaha's Rex Sta ten to catch him . Another Yamaha , this time with Neal Snarr aboard , holeshot the second moto with Hardick and Danny Turner close behind. Hardick passed Sna rr and while Dan Turner attempted the sarne .. he crashed in the same turn as the first moto, His bike was ' unable to shift gears aft erwards du e to a broken shifting mechanism so he retired. Eric McKenna and his Jan Huutermann-tuned Euro-Cycles Maico then took over th ird with Staten and Wood behind. Staten worked for a couple of laps to get by McKenna and you could hear him "singing" (as he called it) to McKenna in th e corners as he made his passing attempts. The songs he sang would be nothing but bleeps on the radio. though . Hardick, way out front , won as Staten took second . Woods was third and th ird overall, Hardick was again second off the line in th e 250cc Pro class and soon in front. Yamaha-mounted Larry WOOck and Ron Turner chased him. Staten's Yamaha and Dan Turner's AI Collardtuned Maico were running on 7-Up and "moving up" from mid-pack. Ron caught Hardick and passed him for the win as Staten moved up to third and finished in that spot, Dan Turner and Wosick followed . . Moto -X Fox Yamaha rider Pete Wanket won moto rwo after Hondamounted Jeff Jennings holeshot then bit out. Staten was in fifth, but moved through the pack to take second and win the overall. Jerome Heiberger gassed his Can-Am up to third Jor fourth overall while Hardick was fourth for runner-up. Littl e Ricky Ryan had his Yamaha in front of the 125cc Pros with Yamahamounted Brad Harrison, Team Cycle Works Yamaha pilot Mike Tripes and Magoo following. As Ron Turner took the lead on his watercooled , single shock Suzuki, Tripes . went down and Magoo crashed into him. Magoo got up and restarted 'as Johnny O'Mara passed him on his Mugen water-crosser. Turner was way our ' front and stayed there for the win as Johnny O · and Magoo battled for second. Magoo kept his box stock Honda (engine , forks and shocks'} right on O'Mara's rear fend er . On the last lap , Magoo flew his stocker right pa st the $4000 MXer for., second. T ripes finished fourth . I 125cc USGP winner O'Mara hole shot the final moto with Tripes, Harrison and Magoo close beh ind. O'Mara J pulled a lead as Magoo passed Tripes. Turner caught and passed Tripes then followed Magoo as they chased after Johnny O. O'Mara went down and Magoo wa's now in the lead with Turner and Tripes second and th ird. Magoo held off T urne r for the win and the overall with Turner second on both counts, Yamaha-mounted Jeff Watts passed Tripes for third and th e sam e overall with Tripes fourth for fourt h overall. Argyll hosts a full weekend of MX By Mel White DIXON, CA, AUG. 9-10 Argyll Park hosted a full weekend of motocross this weekend with a separate complete program each day. Labor Day week- end coming up promises even more: ~ free lamb and hamburger BBQSaturday night (courtesy of the Campbells and Bill Harrison), a rock band for Sunday night dancing, an RM125 to the top Novice or Junior rider, $2000 Pro purse and more. For th is mid-August weekend, the Saturday turnout was not large, but those who came were quite happy with the long, uncrowded motos they were able to enjoy . The lake is full again and warm riders could take the plunge as well as clean up the bikes for Sunday's races. Another real plus for Argyll is that the long and varied track has alternate lines so that a faster rider can usually find a way past in many places. And of course, Parts-In-The-Pits was there, easy to take for granted, but always appreciated when he makes the critical difference between a ride or a DNS . Dave Wood (Yam) cleanly swept the 250cc Expert motos. Lee Miller (Hon) was first into tum one in moto one and last out. Wood came around the turn leading Renny Bruns (Mai), Beau Magly (Yam) and Curtis Clark (Yam).
