This year's Friday event was no exception as over 1,200 spectators packed the hillclimb portion of the Jackpine Gypsies c1ubgrounds outside of Sturgis. It's not hard to understand the attraction of the hillclimb as it is a show case of flying bikes and bodies. The hill looks deceptively easy from the highway. Because of the looseness of the surface , big bikes are spectacular' to watch , but are definitely slower than some of their smaller-sized brothers. This was nowhere better illustrated than in the 250cc class. Dan Deubler, longtime South Dakota racer from Sioux Falls , was the first to scale the hill with a time of 5.9 seconds. Duebler used a Bultaco for his win . The 373·500cc and 501-750cc class wins went to Don Juhlin aboard a brace of Hondas. Julin started things off with a bang as he topped the hill in 5.457 seconds. But, Juhlin didn't have a cakewalk. Dennis Johnson tied Juhlin's first pass and set the stage for a showdown finish. Waiting in the wings, with times of 5.769 and 5.981, were Terry Soutar and Dan Duebler, respectively. The second pass up the hill was all Juhlins, although it must have seemed like an eternity while he fought for traction. Juhlin took more than three seconds longer to reach the crest than his first run, but it was good enough for the win. Gordon Miller of Sacramento, CA, outgunned Tom Grimm for the Open class crown. Miller scaled the hill on his first pass with a time of 10.080 . Grimm , aboard a Harley which auto- . 19
