Obie Leff rode his Yamaha 50 to a scrambles victory Frida y a nd also a mo toc ross win on Sa turday. Kawasaki 80 Expert Curt Bissell showed the crowd a nice ride for a first in moto one and it looked like a repeat for the overall when bike failure in t he last tum forced a push job to the side. Even th e crowd yelling "push it" couldn't help him ac ross the line in time. Kimo Casey (Yam) after a spe cta cula r cr ash with Todd Jobb in the 125cc Novice di vision came right back out in th e 250cc Novic es to keep a tight four runners for first pla ce . Clinton Maples' Yamaha held off Ken Carlson , Rich Powell (Mai) and Kimo by a wheel's length the whol e ra ce. Rounding th e com er that had pr e· viously given p ro blems to Cu rt . Kimo pulled off with a sm oking engine on th e last lap. Ken and Rich continued . the battle in th e second moto with Ken Carlson taking first overall an d Rich second. But thi s com er was not th rough offering its cha llenges to th e rid ers. T erry Pogue. in the 250cc Junior and Open Expe rts on a Yamaha. was hea d ing for th e checkered an d ca me around for a perfect wash out to the righ t. Wood and Cantaloupi victor at Sacramento MX By Greg "Nucl ear" Neukam SACRAMENTO , CA , AUG . 8 Dave Wood won all four motos he competed in for th e overa ll in 250cc and Open Pro competition and Cory Cantaloupi combined two seconds in the 125cc class for the overall at Sac ramento Raceway's Fri day night motocross. Wood's Yamaha and Ed Ma rchini's Maico were the onl y two Open bikes racing in the Pro d ivision to night and Dave had no trouble holeshoting both motos and staying out front to the checkered. Greg Bonovi ch 's Kawasaki look ed like it was rocket powered as he arrive d at tum one first in both 250cc motos in front of "Mr. Holeshot" himself. Da ve Wood . W ood go t around after a few la ps in the first moto and just pulled away for th e win . Billy Gross i, who ca me up for th e weekend to race at Prairie City OHV Pa rk in the CMC Pa cific Championship Series Sunday, ca me from th e ba ck of th e pack and as he was passing slower riders , slid out in some mud . This dropped his Husky back a cou ple of positions , but he gassed it ba ck through the pack to finish fourth behind Randy Chapman's Ma ico . Bonovich followed Wood pa st th e line for second. In moto two, Wood got by Bonovich a little sooner, but Grossi was in better position after tum one this time around as he passed a couple of riders and finis hed seco nd in front of Bonovich . Bonovich was second overall and Grossi third . Chapman finished fourth this moto for fourth overall. Tom McK inney, riding a Kawasaki for Mike 's Cycle of Placerville, was 6·5 for fifth . After a restart due to Leon "Luna tic" . Ellis .taking .down half' .the pack when . he got sideways, caught traction and centerpunched everyone , Kenny McKenzie was out fro nt wit h Leon , Cory Canraloupi, Chalma Roberts a nd Steve Vlahos behind . As predi cted , Leon went down wit h McKenzie. Chalma th en took over th e lea d and won. Ca nraloupi was second a nd Vlahos th ird. McKenzie (Su z) was out front of mot o two as "Chargin' Chalma" came fro m last up to an exciting side-by-side d uel with him . As Chalma (Suz) was ta king over first , he slammed hard into the third j um p of t he triple jumps a nd it wedged between his frame and pipe. pop pi ng the pipe out of th e flange . Bye-bye power a nd bye-bye first place. McKenzie won with Cantalou pi (Ya m) second . Cory had the over all and McKenzie was second. Vlahos and his Bill Harrison Ra cing Suzuki ha d two thirds for th e sa me overall . Chalma was able to finish th e mota in fifth an d ende d up fou rt h overall . Dawnita Farris had a second and third for third overall . Dave Wood's sister Sue rode a little Honda XR and after a third in mota one, she blew a head gasket and could onl y manage a fifth in moto two . After the races , a dejected look ing Sue said she thinks "my XR days are over ." Sh e's threatening to get a bigger bike so look out Powder Puffers! T im Aston and Keith Fox finished one-two respectively in both motos for the same overalls in 80cc Pro cornpetition and Grady McLeod won both Intermediate motos . Skiver resumes lessons at SIR By Russ Cazier KENT. WA . AUG . 3 After a one weekend vacation from Northwest iroad raci ng, Randy Skiver retu rned to show Washington Motorcycle Ro adra cing Association riders and fans the fast line around Seattle International Raceway. Skiver has also found a new way to make things more interesting in Open Cafe and Open GP classes. He waits at th e starting line until a ll other bikes are at least a hundred feet down th e track , wheelies awa y through the first three gears and then about a m inut e and a half la te r. leads the pack through tum 10 back onto the straight. Amazingly, Skiver's bike is not that dreadfull y fast; the Suzuki has a four into -one pipe and some cornering clearan ce im p rovem en ts to use the slicks , but tha t is about all . H e even still has stock shocks on the machine. Ch ris Michak had his monoshock Kawasak i GP bike sorted out enough to keep Skiver reasonably honest in Open GP . but without Bob Loose to push him in Open Cafe, Skiver had to slow down occasionally and look over his shoulder to keep from being lonesome as he won both classes. Several other roadracers got their character bui lt on t his race day . Wayne Ta nner too k advantage of Keith Pinkstaff's attempt to squeeze one mo re race out of a disappearing rear tire and broke Pinkstaff's string of Open Production wins . Pinkstaff put on a fi ne demonstration of late braking into turns, but couldn't get any drive com ing out from his bald . rear tire and settled for a distant second . behind an ins pired Tanner. Their next meeting should be most interesting now that T a n ner has discovered that Pinksta ff is ac tual lv human. Bria n Su tt o n got 'a th ird place trophy th e hard way in 250cc GP . In' the first heat , Su tto n lost the lea d on the last la p with a broken sh ift lever and a fried clutch b ut pushed across the finish line for sixt h. In the second heat . Sutton led th roughout . but came onto the straight' with th e checkered flag in front of h im and a flat tire flapp ing merr ily behind . Fortunately, Sutton had enough of a lead th at he could lim p alon g the side of th e tra ck and take the flag ab out four inc hes ahead of Sid Collier. Collier's on e-two finis hes were less enterta ining, but goo d for th e overa ll win . . Da ve Wilson 's smooth . con sisten t style, plus a recently acquired Kawasaki 750 were goo d for a long deserved win in 750cc Product ion . Rod Chronister was another ben eficiary of a cha rac ter b uilding session , as a wild sideways cook -off from th e sta rting grid pu t him well back in th e pa ck into turn one . He made up a lot of the deficit , but not all , finishing fourth in the first heat. A better start in the second heat helped and Chronister took second in th e heat and finished the day with a second overall. but it was clearly Dave W ilson 's day in 750cc Production as he won both heats.
