Bu t while the weather ma y have been cool, the day 's racing could only be described as hot , wild and woolly as ride rs ca reened off trees an d Monte Ca rlos and looped ou t , sending ma n and machin e hurtling through the air in different di rections for 20 feet or more. At the end. of the .day though , Carey Lund and Chris Alber ts fou nd themselves at the front of the Pro payoff line with Lund ta king the 125cc cl ass and Alberts winning the 250cc class. The 125cc Pro race was a show of incredible speed and skill as J am ie Claassen from Coos Bay, and Roseburg ride r "Scary Carey" Lu nd duked it ou t for 30 minutes. Claassen took the early lead in the first moto with Lund close behi nd . J eff Bryant was a close th ird with Rick Smi th in fourth. Smit h found his way around Bryant for thi rd after several close laps and Lund was . working on Claassen for first . Lund was absolutely going as fast as his Yamaha would carry him and at one point on the track, a straightaway with three large jumps, "Scary Carey" would hold his throttle wide open as he flew over the jumps, sometimes looking totally out of control. But somehow he was able to stay on top of his scoot and he 'was soon side by SIde with Claassen in a fast , left -hand sweeping tum. As Carey attempted to pass Claassen, unavoidable contra ct was made , sending Lund cartwheeling along th e tr ack, Claassen almos t came to a stop himsel f for just a second, but soon re o gained his composure when he saw Carey m iracu lo us ly rem ou n t hi s Yamaha. Even mo re re ma rk abl e was that Lund was able to once again pull himself up to Claassen's. rea r wheel and as the two passed the white flag , it looked like a fight to th e end. But with half a lap to go , Claassen pulled off the track and into the p its . Lu nd cruised in for firs t with Sm ith in second an d Bryan t in th ird . Claassen commented later tha t he broke several spokes which th en caused his chain to derail. There were some anxious moments earlier in the moto when Kent Egli overshot a fast comer and smacked right int o a tree. Ken t was abl e to dodge Lund and Claassen who couldn 't see him as th ey rounded the comer. Kent remount ed and wobb led int o the pits shaken, bu t unhurt. . Claassen was able to rer air his borrowed Honda's rear whee for the second moto and when the gate d ropped , the war resumed as he and Lund went into the first tum side by side .
