LOOKING BACK
We followed a day in the life of a motorcycle tire tester and pictured one
of them on the cover in action on the 57° banking at the Contidrom test
track in Germany... We covered the AMA GNC/Winston Pro Series road
race at Braselton, where Rich Schlachter out-dueled Wes Cooley for
the win... After winning the 500cc U.S. GP at Carlsbad a week earlier,
Marty Moates competed in the AMA 500cc National MX at Sears Point
but suffered a DNF when his bike's frame broke. Good timing. Chuck Sun
took the win; Broc Glover won the 125cc class.

Racers found a creative way of cooling off during the Vikings Motocross
Series in Sacramento, California. We were so impressed, we pictured it
on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago. That's factory Greeves rider
Arthur Browning in the center... Jim Rice won the San Jose Half Mile...
Promoter Edison Dye invited some of the best motocrossers in the world to
Saddleback Park and White Rock MX (Sacramento) and we covered both
races. The top rider was Finland's Heiki Mikkola.
