The Labor Dey Mini Grend Prix portion of the American Off·Road Fe.t1vel et Indian Dunes August 3031 is the last big minicycle event before school resumes and three Suzuki bikes will be given away. according to event organizers. The O ra nge County/Long Bea ch Chapter of the National Safety Cou ncil in cooperation with the Mot orcycle Safety Fou nd a tion , has establis hed two training sites with more to open in the near future . These motorcycle safety training areas are serving both Los Angeles and Orange Counties. To date they have trained more than 200 students. There are separate courses available for both the novice rider and experienced rider. The motorcycles and helmets are supplied for the Novice Rider Course. Both courses are 20 hours in duration and are avail a ble to anyone of licensing age . Graduates of these training programs will be awarded with course completion cards , making them eligible for insu rance premium discounts offered b y several insurance companies of up to 15 % off. Enduro/lSDT rider Drew Sm ith will have the cast removed from his right wrist in three weeks and then begin workouts in preparation for the ISDT. Suzuki team rider Sm ith broke his wrist at the beginning of the season and rode several events w ith it in a cast until it was decided that a vacation from competition was needed for it to heal properly. HosPITal STOP: Edgar "Fergie" Fuhr, a respected mechanic on the flat track scene, admitted himself to a hospital following Sunday's Guly 20 ) Kenton, Ohio, half mile. Fergie reportedly "felt bad" while traveling home and decided to enter a hospital. He's in intensive care and a temporary pacemaker has been installed. Wheelie King Doug Domokos returned to Atlanta to be filmed for a second segment in Bert Reynolds' upcoming movie Cannonball. Domokos was in Atlanta six w eeks ago for his first part in the m ovie. in which he wheel ied a Harley Sportster. His performance went over well and Domokos was ask ed to return as a double in some other motorcycle scenes. The W heeli e King 's visit to Atlanta climaxed with some cast parties as fi lm ing of the movie nears completion. Two rounds remain in the California State Enduro Championship (the OCt. 26 Jackhammer Enduro in northern California and the Dec . 7-8 Last Chance Enduro in southern California), and as of this writing. T om Webb leads in the overall point standings. According to Winston Pro Series team m anager Dave Knight, Winston has hired . producer/director Peter Silver to adapt his ideas into an overview of the series through new racing footage, ten hours of film shot for his first produc tion a nd not used a nd int erviews. "What we're tryi ng to d o ," said Kni ght', "is to make the film more personal and let the peo ple meet the riders .. both past and p resent. The title will remain the same and we hope to debut the film at the AMA Professional Awards Ba nq uet in November. The film will be available to clubs, interested groups, promoters and others through the AMA ." Lady MXers across the land. remember thet the Women's MX Nationals are coming to Carlsbed on Aug. 17. Though the 125cc Expert National was he ld earlier to coincide with filming of the Carlsbed 600cc U.S. MXGP for ABC's Wide World of Sports. there 's still the 250cc National Championship to be decided. as well as all the Ameteur and Novica classes. Winston Pro Series Rookie of th e Yea r candidate Rob Crabbe is poised to hang up his leat hers. " I don't know what to do, " said Crabbe. " I don't have a sponsor and I just don 't have a ny more money. I feel I have the talent to be a good racer , but I'll hav e to quit if something doesn't happen very soon. Driving to the Topeka National and having it canceled was the final blow .
