" id ent ified ." This doesn't sound like much . until you know that one BLM official stated that " identified " meant "iden tified appropriate for use ." Guess .how many trails will be left open for your use . Areas of Critical Environmental Con cern are another problem. The Bureau wants approximately 72 ACECs . Some are justified; many are not. It is probabl y just a coinciden ce that many of the ACECs are pla ced in such a manner as to block access to large areas of the desert . which are not incl uded within the ACEC . Many of (he ACECs are located in areas now used for desert racing. (Yu ha desert racing area - WBST gone.) Disgruntled privateer The factories own professional raeing - motocross. road racing. dirt track. etc . - with super trick machines. highly paid riders. mechanics. paid expenses, bon uses a nd more. I ha ve enjoye d riding enduros and desert and an ISDT qualifier because I had a chance of doing well - even winning Of trophy. Then a couple of years ago the Japanese invaded enduros and ISDT and now hardly anyone wins a big event (National) unless he's a factory rider. I rode the Baja 1000 last year with a friend and really loved it. Most of the winners and high finishers were pri vateers, except for the two Husky teams . At the start of this year Yamaha and Bill Bell hired a fistful of riders - Roeseler , Johnson . Fishback . Ogilvie. Miller. Ru tten and others to race the SCORE races. [ rode the Parker 400 and watched th e factory Yamaha . Husky and KTM teams run away from everyone - by shee r numbers if nothing else . Ogilvie and Miller won th e Baja lnternacional on a [ 20 mph YZ465 . My 465 goes " boom " at less tha n 100 mph. Fishback and Ru tt en won the 25 0cc cl a ss o n th e fast est "stock " Yamaha I've ever see n . Bot h these tea ms ha d everythi ng ta ke n ca re of a nd su ppli ed to them - then go t some thi ng like a $5000 bonus from Yamaha for winning. For pits th e Yamaha cre ws ha ve mo re sp a re p arts t ha n Pr emi er Yamaha buys all yea r. The other day m y fr iend gave me SCORE's brochure for th e Rivers id e Off-Road Championships. I watched th e race last year and was hoping to ri d e this year. Then [ read th e brochure. It says. "a ll new 2 ~ m ile course designed with th e assistance of Bill Bell of yamaha ... " Everybody knows Yamaha has already bought all of the best riders . most of th em for merly with Husky to clean up in all of th e SCORE and Baja races. Yamaha ha s won all of th e SCORE races with Bill Bell's riders. Now on top of that Yamaha and SCORE are la ying out the SCORE ra ce course . Wha t's left for th e privatee rs? The fac to ries a lre ady ha ve the best riders . best bik es. best tu ners. best team man agers . best everythi ng . T he fa ctories pay to sponsor races . th e promoters ta ke our money and we privateers haven 't got hardly any place left to race and have a chance. I'm keeping my $250 entry for Riverside and spending it on a nice . long trail ride weekend. Baja and SCORE seemed like the last refuge for a privateer. But I sup· pose Larry Roeseler or Jack Johnson or Bruce Ogilvie or who knows what factory guy will layout the Baja 1000 - shortcuts and all . R . L. RUSSELL Flintridge. CA Lori 's thanks At the Rovers Team Race on July 27th , my bike broke and [ was stuck in the desert. I wou ld like to take this time to thank all of the people that stopped to make sure I was OK and that I had some water . (I had a canteen full of water . but of course. I drank it all .) I would also like to specially thank Doug Behnke for coming out and get ting me . and my partner. Margi Dickin son . for wa iting and making sure I made it back safely. Thanks to everyone. LORI THEEL Desert Daisys M.C. Lak ewood . CA Stim u lat ing Are you having trouble gelling motivated to do something about the desert? Here a re a few stimuli tha t may help you to get moving. These are the latest figures and areas we have been able to find for the proposed final COCA plan - thus they may change (possibly for th e wors e) in the next few weeks. • Breakdown of COCA by class: C - wilderness - 16% Limited - 52 % Moderate - 28% Intensive - 3.8% (2.78% open to vehicles) Probab le "open" areas: johnson Valley . Stoddard . Dumont , and Glamis . (Rand open area - gone.) If you think this is bad - smile - .it gets worse . Class M (what we call exist ing roads and wa ys) may be cha nged to be much [ike Cla ss L (des igna ted roads and ways). Desert Advisory Com mitt ee wan ts to cha nge "ex isting' to Mammoth Bar c losure On July 13 [ was privileged to be the organizer of a motocross race at one of the great racing areas in California. The Mammoth Bar facility at Auburn is a sano area next to the middle fork of the American River. It's part of the Auburn Da m project and will some day be under 1000 feet of water when they fill the dam . The purpose of this letter is to gather support from the motorcycle com m u nity to help us keep this area open for competitive events. At the conclusion of our J u ly 13 race the head ranger advised me that he would recommend that no more motocross events be alIowed in the a rea. H e rea d ily agreed that the event had been very professiona lIy conducted and that he had no complaints about the race in general. It seems that he had received complaints from -some fishermen and gold miners (dredgers). along with several of the PITS trials group , all complaining because they didn't have free access to that area on that particular Sunday. It seems that 12 phone calls should not carry so much weight when you compare them to the 800 plus racers and fans who had a very enjoyable day. As a long-t im e participant and promoter of motocross, I'd like to ex press my concern for th e sport in general and this track in particular. It distresses me each time another track falls by the wayside. I'm sure that each of us can th ink of many tracks that have closed in the past 10 years. At this rate. where will we be racing in another few years? ' If you are as personally concerned as I am. you can be of much help by addressing a letter to Pete Dangermond, Direc to r , California Department of Parks and Recreation. P.O . Box 2390 .
