Elliott,Wanket, Turn By Patti Firth-Trotter CARLSBAD, CA , JULY 27 The Continental Moto-sport Club and d ie Robert Bosch Company put together one heck of a motocross series. For the Pro riders, there is a grand total of $41,350.00 in cash a rid contingencies. For the sportsmen there is $11,009.00 in cash and goodies. At all six of the events there will be a $3,000 .00 Pro purse. The races are being run as two' da y events so as to accommodate all of the riders who want to take a chance at the cash and glory. By the way the race looked today, th is series is soon to be as big as the CMC Golden State Series . So many 250cc riders showed up that they had to be divided int o qualifiers with onl y the top eight being eligible to go to the main event. The first twenty 250cc Pro riders got off the line with Suzuki rider Ron Turner taking the holeshot with "Rocket Rex" Staten, Peter Wanket, LOP hero Marty Moates on Yamahas and Suzuki's Robert Elliott following the leader. Maico-mounted Val Tamietti, Roo riding Jeff Jennings and Juan Benavidez on a Can-Am held down the sixth through eighth slots. Turner held onto the lead for five of the eight laps only to have "T he Rocket" roost Ron and take the win . Following Rex across the finish securing a place in the finals were Turner, Wanket, Moates, Jennings, Benavidez, Tony Gomez on a Honda . and Debbie Tamietti's husband Val. 10 Scott Johnson aboard his Honda grabbed the holeshot in the second qualifier. He was followed by Honda riders Brian Maloney, Jim Tarantino and Yamaha -mounted Carlos Serano. A little farther back in the pack was Ammex rider Gary Jones and Andrew Jefferson on a Suzuki. johnsofi~ ~as able to hold off the rapidly advan cing Maloney for three laps: from that point in the race Scott had to settle for second. The third through eighth places were filled by Serano, Jefferson, Yamaha rider Ed Arnet , Horsepower Factory rider Lee Ramage, Woody Carlson on a Kawaski and James Gochmanosky on his Yammie. The riders who did not make th e qualifiers were at this point eligible for a consolation race. When the culling of riders was complete, the 250cc Pros got on the line to begin the business .of going for the cash . Pete Wanket whipped around the first tum ahead of the rest of the pack to take a lead that he never relinquished. Right on Pete's knobby was Johnson, Serano, Staten, Tarantino and Jennings. By the sixth lap , Jennings Iiad \floved into fourth with Tamietti in sixth. Wanket, Johnson and Staten were putting on the show of the moto. The 11th time around the track , John· son looked to be having some major machine problems, then he was out sitting on the trackside with blown fork seals and his hopes of getting in on the money dashed into the dust. Staten wasted no time in grabbing second with Jennings in third and Moates in fourth . Husky rider Marland Whaley was ahead of Serano. Clark Jones. also known as GJ, finished the race in seventh.
