Ramage a nd Johnson holding onto the nex t positions . Jennings held the lead for six laps before Moates made his move and awa y he went . The remainder of the race was a duel between Jennings. Jolinson and Staten with Tony Gomez doing his best to get by "T he Rocket ," but it never came to pass . When the points were tallied Wanket came out with the overall win . At the end of each moto the riders were paid so there were a lot of ha ppy motocrossers walking around . Marty Moates was the first Open Pro rider to come blasting around th e Suzuk i Tower to signal the beginning of the first moto. The lead was short lived as the King of Carlsbad. Maico rid er Ste ve Rhyan , was rig ht there to displace h im before the end of the first lap. Rid ing a four-stroke Roo was "jump'n" Jim Gibson who was in second before la p two . Alan Smith on a Husky was th ird with Moates in fourth . Val Tamiet ti in fift h was ahead of Maic o rid er Dal e Lew is. 'O n the th ird lap Gibson high-sided on th e wall . putt ing himself an d t he Roo on the ground. After som e struggling to get t he bike re-started. J im was off and chasing th e leader again . Lap six is when Rhyan was seen goi ng off th e track and in to th e pits . On examinat ion of t he bike. the problems with the rear end were d iagnosed and corre cted. Steve would be ba ck. . Smith took over as the lead er and held off Ron Turner until the second to last lap. As th e checkers came out , t'he front runners were Turner. Sm ith , Gibson. "CJ" Jones. Suzuki of Pomona's Matt Tedder. Yamaha riders Scott Walker , Robert "Babarino" Mar ino an d Billy Keefe on his H usky. T he second m oto had a co -ta kers of the holeshot - Bob Ma rin o and Da le Lewis. Steve Rh ya n had th e lead . th ough . by the end of the first go ar ound with Ma rino in second a nd • , Ala n Smit i;J jn j h ird , Ron .TI;lr.n~~ .was J ohnson overcame first moto problem s for f ourth in the seco nd. in fourth with a great dice going between Tarnietri and LewIS. Tarnietti took the forward position when he aced Lewis as they cam e careening into the tum at the scoring tower. Clark Jones was a bit farther back in th e pack picking off th e riders and moving to the front . Going up the ledge wheel to wheel with Tamietti, CJ was just a little tighter in the turn and got th e nod for fifth. On lap 12. Gibson grabbed the lead from Rhyan and he went for the win . A four-stroke Roo beat th e two strokes. With a one and three fin ish . Turner took home the major part of the payback. Congratulations also to Ron and his wife on the birth of their new daughter . Suzuki R&D spe cialist Bob Elliott was out to show th e 125cc riders how a well-conditioned, serious rider takes care of business. Bob went wire to wire in both motos to take home a huge chunk of CMC and Bosch bu cks. Mike Tripes was second with long time CMC favorite Ga ry Denton taking third on a Honda , Yamaha riders Scott Manning. , Todd Peterson. a nd " Blasting" Eric Baker in th e fourt h t hrough sixth . pla ces. T he race was p retty mu ch of a pa rad e with rid ers finishing in almost th e same positio ns th ey sta rted in. Elliott . Tripes, Manning .
