Two days of MX
at Fremont

ZAP Supersports' Annual Independence Day Sportsmen MotoCTOSS at Fremont Raceway saw
sand track racing at its best. As

get ting a good fed for wha t it's like to
ride on sand. 11 gets fast , slow, rough,
smooth, up and down with plenty of
supercross -style j umps. Promot er
Larry Kleist d id a good job designing
the track.
This july 4 race featured a regu lar
two-mote p rogram with a bon us third
moto for those who qual if ied .
Valuable merchandise certificates were
awarded to placing riders in this th ird
moto . The rid ers may collect an d
redeem these certificates at the corn plere motorcycle accessories shop opening soon at the Fremont Raceway moto cross track .
In th e first moto of th e 125cc Int er med ia te cla ss, th ere was a cla ssic bailie
between Mark Olund (Yam) and Allen
Silhanek (Ya m) to the checker ed n ag
wit h Olu nd coming ou t on top . Bu t
th e secon d moro sa w Silhanek lead ing
from th e start to finis h to capture first
overall.
In the 250cc In termediat e class , the
first moto win went to Mark Hawo rt h
(Ya m) with Ron DiBasilla (Ka w) a nd
Robb ie W ebst er (Ya m) in ho t pu rsui t.
T he second rnoto saw DiBa silla a nd
W ebst er come out of the gate 1-2 an d
th at 's how it rem ained for the rest of
the race . H aworth got a ba d sta rt,
bu t managed to pull ou t a fourth .
11 was Ma rk Howard (Yam) in the
Open Intermediate class winning th e
first moto easily with Mall Aren a
(Ya m) and Rich Verma ce (Mai)
battling for second, Arena coming out
on top with two laps to go. The second
moto saw Vermace in front on the first
lap , but Roger ' Intorf (Yam) and
Howard quickly took that awa y and
stayed there the rest of the 10·lap race.
In the Min i class , Expert Tyson
Vohland (Yam) showed everyone just
.how fast he is with first place all the
way across . Intermediate Curt Bissel
(Ka w) remained a consistent winner
with first ' and second in his motos for
first overall. Richard Haworth (Kaw)
'ca me awa y with back-to-hack wins in
front of Kevin Hum (Kaw) in the first
moto and Marty Cooper (Yam) in the
second to tak e the Novice overall .
Doug Gillette (H on) took two thi rd
placings to grab second overall.
In 125cc Novice Division One, Ph il
Indihar (Suz) grabbed the holeshot
with Gary Hoover (Yam) and Brad
Wiget (Yam) ho t on his tai l. By lap
two, Hoover moved into the lead while
Suzuki rider Chuck Hageman moved
to th ird. On lap four , Hoove r lost it in
a comer and by the time he restarted ,
he had dropped back to fifth.
Determined to win , Hoov er go t back
on the gas and by lap six had moved
back in to thi rd . On th e last lap , leader
Indihar lost control long en ough to
lose the lead dropping him back to fifth
where he fin ished. Hoover, in a last lap cha rge, ca ug ht Hageman before
th e finish to take first with Ha geman
second and Bill Aguilar (Suz) th ird. In
moro two , Aguilar grabbed the
holeshot and never looked ba ck as he
led from start to finish to get first in
th e race .
On Sunday, the Pros were back with
plenty of good racing . In th eir first
moto , the Open Pros went off with
j erome Heiberger (C -A) and Allen
Berluti (Mai ) taking th e lead . For the
first 12 laps of thi s 15-la p race,
Heiberger and Belruti went neck a nd
neck with no m istakes bein g made,
just fast hard riding. T hen, Berlu ti
m isshifted and wa tched Hei berger pull
away and it was a ll over exce pt for a
final push by Berl uti to m ake it close
at the nag. The seco nd mo to was
Berlu ti all t he way to ca pt u re the
overall and He iberger in secon d for
seco nd overall.
The 125cc Pros' first rnot o saw Mike
Beier (Yam) and you ng Rick Ryan
(Yam) leading all th e way. Ryan was
p ressuring Beier hop ing to ca use a'
m istake a nd pass , but Beier with mo re
expe rience ou tlasted Rya n and pu lled
a way the last two laps . T he second
moto was a carbon copy with Beir first
a nd Ryan second. Ryan , onl y 14, is
cert a in to become a leading name in
mOlOcr~ in the years to come.
In Division One, rnoto on e of th e
250cc Novices, Steve Cano (Yam) a nd
Keith Kanady (Mai) battled to first
and second places. In moto two , Bill
Perreault (Yam) grabbed the holeshot
and held the lead until two turns
before the checkered nag whe n the
pressure from Kanady finally got to
him and Kanady slipped by for first
overall . Perrea ult came in second for
second overall and Cano with a 1·4 got
third .

Vinc e Rondas (Ma i) took convincing back-to -back moto wins to take the
Open Nov ices while Shawn Hantz
(Suz) did th e same to the 125cc Novice
class. Having a string of recent wins,
Hantz has now been upgraded to In termediate.
