Blevins,got the ju m p off th e line and hung onto it until th e halfway point when Williams decided it was his turn and took over a nd was there at the checkere d when it cou nt ed . . Bobby Sanders pu t th e lock on th e Open Money half m ile at th e drop of the flag and never looked back, Craig Will iams was off second followed by Roloff, Rick Reed, Eddie San Roman and Mike Redding, who was at a slight d isadvantage aboard a 250cc. Roloff made his mo ve on W illiams by the second lap and San Roman was far from idle as he came from fifth to third , getting by Reed and Williams. On th e fourth lap Redding slipped by Reed and was able to hold him at ba y until the eighth la p when a broken clutch cable forced him ou t. Sanders picked up first with Roloff second, San Roman th ird , Williams fourth and Reed fifth. . J immy Rosa stru ck gold twice as he captured both the TT and half mile 250cc Amateur/Expert goes. T he half mile saw him go out on top and stay there but not without on e heck of a battle from Roger Thompson , who for lack of any 125cc Experts took on the 250cc machines. Thompson kept the pressure on bu t couldn't find an open· ing that would get him by Rosa . David Vogel was third . It was th e same story on the TT in spite of a super start tha t pu t Thompson out ahead. He held it until th e tight turns on th e cou rse saw Rosa get by. Vogel again was th ird. Martin Vogel kept th e family win streak al ive as he cleaned house in the 250cc Novice goes, taking both the TT and , half mile wins . The TT was a piece of cake but on the half mile Vogel got a strong challenge from Dennis Pinheiro who go t off seco nd behind Vogel but took over th e lead on the second la p . It took Vogel three lap s to get th e lead back a nd a t th e same tim e J . Ward McK ee went on by to drop Pinheiro to third . Brent Bowers, his second time out on his 125cc, put himself one ste p closer to his transfer to Amateur as he walked away with th e 125cc Novice TT and half mi le. J eff Runyan was second in both while Bobby Beer took the third on the TT and Dana Dumond claimed the third on the half mile. The Mini Novices wer e gentlem en in that they believed in ladies first , and T erry Melton was not ab out to a rgue th e po in t as she won bot h t he TT a nd half mile. Wayne Johnston was second on th e TT with Ron Power s third . On th e half mile th ey switch ed pla ces. Due to popu lar demand th ere will be an over 30 class for th e Open bikes. You're on the favorite part of your favorite road, this time everything is right for you to really get some use out of this superbike. You've see n the.pictures in the . magazine, you know how far this baby can lean over and how fast it will run in the quarter. Where is the photographer for Cycle Star magazine, this is going to be a cover shot ride. That' s how you feel. Is that just a little gravel in that next right hander? What is this dark spot in the asphalt just ahead, oil?, brake fluid? , a new patch in the road? OK, the first two turns didn't go that we ll, but the next one.. .A car is coming, better roll it offjust a bit for this one. etc. , etc. , etc. Cancel the photographer . ' Now, how fast can you go? You're at the famous R iverside Int ernational Raceway. The 2.5 mile, nine tum road course is in front of you. The silent challenge of the track pumps the adrenalin up to the red line. The one piece racing leather s feel secure, you check the helmet strap for the fourth time. The ride leader signals. You swing your leg over the four cylinder Kawasaki. The bike is right, you looked it over before. Race tire s, race shocks, flat bars, four into one, hot ignition, Lockhart Oil Cooler, the new giant killerKZ550 is ready for battle. You know that. You fire it up. drop it into first and follow the pro around for the first lap to warm up the tires . He gasses it up a little, y'0u're trying to remember where the turns go. Then it really strikes you. There aren t any cars here, no carripers, no C.H.P. Ya, you're running 115 mphdown this road and no one can touch you! That's the first five miles, you still have thirty five mile s to go. ' Now. you know how fast you can go .
