Kehoe, Hansen, Snorteland soar at CRC Bottlerocket 5000 By Nanette Marie VALENCIA , CA ,JULY 6 Thanks to the good folks at Canoga Park Suzuki and the California Racing Club , riders who came out to Indian Dunes Sunday to compete in th e regular weekend motocross were treated to the Bottlerocket 5000 motocross race, which fea tured a $1000 Pro purse, along with $4000 in tickets to the Superbowl of Motocross a nd trips to Disneyland , In th e Professional ranks . the only rider to score double moto victories in a Pr o class was T eam Honda 's Donnie Hansen , who was aboard his stadium bik e that he would compet e on in the Superbowl. In t he other a ction , Yama ha 's Er ik Keh oe took th e l25c c laurels with a 2· 1 score , while in th e Opens DG 's Pete Snorteland's consistent sec onds earned him th e overall victory. Hansen sta rt ed h is domination of the 250c c class right away as he hol eshot th e first rnoto and began roosting awa y. Richard Bunch snuck in behind Hansen on the first lap , with Pete Snorteland , Mark Barnes, Kenny Zahrt , Kippy Pierce and Bobby Klin e ! trailing, Bunch got off on th e first lapl and that left Snorteland in second , but! the rider cha rging th e hardest was , LOP's Kippy Pierce . Pierce worked around Zahrt in a few laps, then fought for another circu it with Barnes, then set his sights on Snorteland. Pierce caugh t him quickl y, but Snorteland i proved to be an even match for Pierce > and held him a t bay for mo st of th e rem a ining laps. Pierce fin a lly motored , off with a bou t three laps remain ing, but was too far behind Hansen to reel h im in. Snorteland and Barnes rode in 3-4. Mot o two saw Hansen again take th e holeshot, and again he went untouched for the entir e ra ce. This time Pierce go t off in second. and stayed there the whole ra ce. Behind the two was the usually consiste nt Snorteland, and he was content with his third place slot a ll th e way, a nd didn't relinquish it once, not even to Suzuki 's "Radical Ron" T u rn er , who ta iled in fou rth the last half of th e moto , T u rner was suffering from a bee stin g sin ce his first 125c c Pro moto , a sting which he is a llergic to , and trying to rid e all three class es didn't help his physical situation much. With a sevent h in his first moto a fter crashing ea rly , Turner ended up fourth in the overa lls as well behind Hansen . Pierce and Snorteland. Turner came back in the Open Pros to do battl e, and he started things off in the first moto by getting out in front early, and pulling away for the win . Right behind him in second , however, was Snorteland again , ready to charge all the way, Time ran out and he had to finish behind T u rner, but ahead of Kline , Mike Shoemaker, and Kenny Zahrt. Moto two saw Zahrt grab the holeshot and roost off to an early lead. Behind him, Snorteland and Shoemaker battled . for secon d, while Turner was stuck in the middle of the pack. Shoemaker soon reeled in Zahrt, and the battle was on for the lead. Zahrt tried to hold him off but was unsuccess ful halfway through th e race when he appeared to tire , Shoemaker headed off in front . and Zahrt then found Snorteland knocking at his fender . It wasn 't long before Zahrt was placed back into third . Then Ron Turner was all over Zahrt, who by this time was hating life in general , and he fell back to fourth, By mote's end , Bill Hagen had also left his mark , and Zahrt was in fifth . In th e overalls, it read Snorteland first . Turner second , fol lowed by Shoemaker, Bill Hagen's 6-4 , and Zahrr's 5-5 . Turner was out t here again in the 125cc Pros, In round one. he took the lead on about the third lap after Erik Kehoe took the holeshot, but couldn't hold off the Suzuki pilot. But before Turner made his pass , he looked like a rod eo cowboy, swatting frantically at his back. A bee slipped up there and eventually stung him, but Turner kept on charging, despite his allergy to them. After passing Kehoe, he began to pull out until John Whelchel moved in and took over second when Kehoe bailed in the sa nd , From there Whelchel slowly worked up behind Turner, who was beginning to get dizz y from the sting , Halfway through the rnoto, T u rner had a strike of good luck when Whelchel's Yamaha
