Guess instead of a bounty on Clint Hardick , we should just pay him to stay home , as the "Racin' Red hea d " is just plain running everybody offl Hardick also was the first qualifier in the KPRI Competition Hill jump contest with a 60·foot effort. However, he was unable to top Bill Curran's 62~ foot effort set last month, so the $25 from Suzuki of California in EI Cajon will be added to by $25 more for next week . Hey , somebody co me down here and give Hardick some more competition! And likewise , in the Pee Wees, where 'Jamin' Jamie" Conney blasted the Gaumond boys once again to retain her grip on the "Bounty Trophy." T he ATCs had th eir first really big night with lots of riders in both the Open an d the 115·152cc Modified classes , Mark "Waxie" Weixeldorfer - a former CMC Pro MXer - took a close one from Dea n Su ndahl in the Open class and Bob Gilliam ran away from a huge field in the 115-152cc Modified. Cannon booms at Corona TT/HM .r By Elaine Jones Ph,ot o b y D ~n M a h onyI . Wizard RaCing Photography • ~9.~9.l'{~ ,_ C;t>" WN,F; !~ 34 • Nobody dominated the Money races at Corona but it was m ore a case of bad luck than a lack of trying. The 250cc Money 'TT was supposed to be a four way battle but when Chris Cannon was sidelined with mechanical problems it was left to Jeff Johnson, Robert Pfetzing and Steve Karsten. Karsten got the holeshot and th e edge when Pfetzing and Johnson got together on the first tum. Pfetzing came out running in the second slot with Johnson a super close third. Six laps into the race Pfetzing's bike started sputtering and Johnson was able to get by and get within striking distance of Karsten. Unfortunately it was too late and he had to settle for second with Pfetzing limping home third. Cannon vindicated himself in the O pen Money T'T. Rich Volk got the jump off the line but Cannon's quick 560cc Yamaha definitely had the edge throug h the tight stuff and he had th e lea d by the second lap. From there on out the lead was his as he put more and more daylight on the field . Vol k claimed second and Bob Russell rounded out the field with third . The 250cc Money half mile saw J ohnso n get some sweet revenge on Ka rsten. Johnson was more than ready and when the flag dropped he went to the front like a bullet with Karsten right behind him and Pfetzing in third . Pfetzing, looking for some vindication himself, got by Karsten on the second lap and held him at bay until the fifth lap when Karsten returned the favor. Pfetzing was unable to come back and had to settle for third with Karsten second and Johnson a very solid first. Cannon, Rich Volk and Bobby Garabedian squared off in the Open Money half mile and the fireworks started right from the start. It was Garabedian on top with Cannon a nd Volk a su per close second a nd third and Bob Russell, Rick Reed and Eddie San Rom a n in the fourth, fifth and sixth slots . Cannon let out all the stops a nd slipped u nder Gara bed ia n 'on 't he second la p to come u p with' the number one spot. Nobody changed position until the nimh lap when Reed went out and San Roman moved into fifth . It seemed to be all he needed but it turned out to be too much to gain and too late to gain it; a ll he was able to do in the one lap rema ining was get by Russell and take over fourth behind <;:,!~~q'l" qll<. ;IPQHa,rjlP~Qif1l" " • • Garabedian had his moment in the winner's circle in the Open Amateur/ Expert half mile where he romped wire to wire ahead of Bob R ussell and Rich Plueger. Russell claimed the Open Amateur/Expert 'TT in -the same fashion . Keith Guthery came up with a double win in the Open Novice. On the half mile he was chased by Ron Bartels with J im Wood slipping by Tom Graves at the wire to take the third. On the T'T it was Wood who chased Guthery with Ba rt els putting an early lock on the third. Gordon Loar, sporting a "For Sa le" sign on his bike , gave it the best . possible sales pitch by winning both 250cc Novice goes. The Tf went wire to wire with Steve Smith and J im Sten tz not ab le to do more tha n follow him ho me. Loa r did the same thi ng on the half mile with Rick Morton getting by Stentz on the last lap to take the second. J im my Rosa and Terry Singlet on split the 250cc Ama teu r/ Expert goes . The T"T went to Rosa and was his fr om the start. David Vogel gave him a run for his mo ney bu t j ust couldn't find the chi nk in Rosa's armor. Singleton had Ken Corpe knocking on his door all the way but Singleton did a good job of defensive riding and came hom e with all the marbles. Do rothy Rowe worked her way throught traffic and came up with the third. Results TT MINI NOV: 1. Brian Barrick (Yam); 2. Jason Bell (Kaw ); 3. Don Ambfose (Yam). MINI EX: 1. BOl; 3. TIm Earls (SUl).
