notions and conflicts. Mr. Gianatsis has been m isinformed about Steve Stackable's position in his new Maico contract. Had Mr . Gianatsis done the necessary reporter research to compile correct and accurate information, he would have learned that Steve Stackable, PDQ and Maico have been negotiating for this change since January , 1980 . This team that Mr. Gianatsis claims is "ba nkru pt" still holds contracts with their riders and will continue to show up for all the races for the 1980 season. PDQ also is contracted for 1980 by Yamaha , Bel-Ray Lubricants, Bosch Spark Plugs, Keystone Suspension, and Hi -Point Products. It would seem unreasonable that PDQ would be "bankrupt" without notifying these people. This team may be in financial trouble at the present time, but this team obviously has more drive and ambition than an y other privateer team . We wish that in the future, Mr. Gianatsis would write the actual motorcycle news, rather than his own fantasies. As far as the majority of the professional people involved in motocross are concern ed , the extent of ill regard toward this reporter has too long been left untouched . o 00 (j) 1""""4 WBST America's only weekly motorcycle newspaper Sh a ron Clayto n. The laws dealing with dirt bikes in Uta h are not "lax." Unless a motorcycle or an y other motor ve hicle can pass a safety inspect ion : i.e . , brake lights , hom, et c. • it cannot be legally operated on public roads. Utah was one of th e first states to pass a fully com prehensive ac t dealing with off-highway vehicles in 1971 , which is the Recrea tion Veh icle Act. The Division of Parks and Recreation has been given th e respo nsibility to ad min ister th is Act for th e state. At th e present time we ha ve four parks which wer e crea ted speci fica lly for OH V use, and have designated several other areas within Sta te Pa rks for this use. T here are also two other OHV parks curre ntly on th e drawing . boards which sho uld be rea dy sometime in 1981 or '82. W e a te also work ing in cooperation with local a nd federal agencies to p rovide ot her OHV areas for publi c use, in which there are many such des igna ted . W e hope tha t we will be a ble to add to a nd improve OHV areas withi n th e state, but we arc being faced wit h a shortage of funds . Hopefully. the mo ney situation will be reme died in J an ua ry by passage of a bi ll tha t would return OH V gas tax to the O HV pro gram. Photo by Eberhard LuethkA On Sunday, June 22, 1980 I watched with pride as a "yo ung loca l hero" won the hearts of Ame rica n motocross fans by decisively winning not just on e bu t both motos at the Bel -Ray U.S. Grand Prix. Well Marty, if you're reading this , all I can say to you is you finally opened every bod y's eyes. John Taylor of Yankee Cycles helped you r ca ree r along with GP expe rience on a n Ossa a few yea rs ago . So there were a few of us who recog· nied you r pot en tial and tried , in vai n, to "ope n the industry's eyes" to you. They preferred to remain blind. My you ng friend. you have forced them to become aware of you now . Whatever your future holds for you now is overdue and well-deserved. CA Team PDa alive and well In th e June 4th editions of Cycle N ews, J im Gianatsis wrote an article that include d an item about Team PDQ which he based on idle gossip , not facts. Tea m PDQ has run into som e financial difficulties , as is common among p rivateer teams. Bu t Team PDQ is still showing top privateer posit ions at every race a nd shall conti nue to do so as they are still the strongest privat eer team ever to gather in MX history . PDQ feels that Jim Gianatsis writes too much according to his personal The California Department of Transportation is currently conducting studies which might allow motorcycles to use the diamond lanes on freeways . Presently these lanes can only be used by buses and carpool vehicles carrying three or more people. Another study might exempt motorcycle riders from waiting in line on metered freeway on ramps as well. Even if you don't plan on using the freeway system yourself. it would be beneficial to support this movement. Certainly it would make traveling the freeways safer for riders and could improve our public image. I feel that the hidden results would be an increase in motorcycle sales and more citizen involvement' to defeat adverse motorcycle legislation. For those out of state readers of Cycle News Wesl , it wouldn't hurt to write either. You might be planning a motorcycle vacation here and what is adopted in California is usually implemented in other states. CalTrans has appointed a Motorcycle Coordinator and he is a biker.
