Hardick, Gillman, Taylor top -Saddleback Suzuki/ SSM Series finale By Terry Whytal .., ORANGE, CA,JUNE21 Clint Hardick rode his Suzuki to the Open class win and followed it with a second overall finish in the 250cc Pro race. Hardick's 30 performance this week, along with the points earned from good finishes in the first two rounds of the series , made him the big money winner in the $600 Pro point fund. Nearly 300 riders showed up for the final race and to be on hand for the drawing for the Suzuki RM80 donated by Saddleback Suzuki of Laguna Hills . The winner: John Cutner of ana heim. "That's me , that's mel" yelled Cutner as his name was drawn. "T his is really fanrasticl" Hardick made it clear he was going for the gold as the Open Pro class rocketed onto the track for moto one. Hardick quickly moved into the lead with Scott Cavness putting his Suzuki into second. Matt Tedder slipped his big RM into third ahead of Yamaha riders Ed Arnet and Bill Hagen. As the riders came past the scoring stand at the end of the first lap Hardick was well established as th e leader with nearly 10 bikelengths on Cavness. Tedder spent some time on the ground on lap two but quickly reo mounted in II th to begin a race long charge back towards the leaders. Hagen worked his way past Arnet 10 put some pressure on Cavness while Rich Zobel danced his Kawasaki up to challenge Arnet for the fourth position. Hagen's fine ride soon came to an end as mechanical gremlins struck and sent him to the pits. At the halfway point Tedder had climbed into the fifth and joined Zobel and Arnet in their battle. Tedder's superior lines around the course soon had him past Zobel and Arnet and closing on Cavness. Three la ps la ter and as the white flag came out, Tedder took over second place and Hardick cruised past the mechanics' area with a 40 second lead over the rest of the field. At the checkers it was Hardick , Tedder, Cavness, Arnet and Maico rider John Rienholt . Hardick came to th e line for the second race ready to do business. "I'm gonna win this onel" predicted Hardick and as the gate dropped he shot into the lead using every ou nce of power in the 420cc motor of his Suzuki. Cavness again settled int o second place followed by Zobel, Arnet and Yamaha rid er Chris W hite. Tedder was off to a poor start an d fin ished lap one in eighth place. Tedder put on a tr em endous charge to finish in the runner-up position but the race was all Hard ick's as he once again opened up a huge lead by the halfway point and cruised in for the win . Tedder took home the second place money with Rienholt getting third and White finishing fourth after Arnet DNF and Cavness faded wtih bike problems. The first 250cc Pro rnoto brought back memories of two years past as Scott Gillman roosted his Yamaha into a commanding lead and never looked back. Rick Maki took second on his Yamaha while Hardick settled for' third on an RM250. Moto two turned ou t a bit different as Hardick fou rid overdrive and flew past early leader Gillm an to tak e the checkers first. The overall win went to Gillman with a 1·2 score over Hardick's 3·1. Mak i picked up the th ird place money with Honda rider Scott Johnson in fourth . The 125cc Pro ba ttle was action packed and star studded with Team Honda riders Richard Coon and Ron Sun matched up against local hotshoes like Mugen rider Johnny O 'Mara , LOP stylist David Taylor and DG/Honda ace Chris Heisser. Taylor motored into the early lead of moto one while Coon , Sun and Honda rider Jim Holley diced for second. Coon finally worked his way past Sun after one of the closest and most exciting duels yet seen at Saddleback. Coon reeled in Taylor as the moto neared the finish and made several strong attempts to take over the lead but Taylor held firm and scored the win. Coon took . second over O'Mara, Sun, Holley and Heisser. Heisser shot into ' the front spot as the pack screamed through turn one at the start of race two. Sun was second as the pack completed lap one , Suzuki rider Scott Burnworth third . Coon fourth , Holley fifth and Taylor sixth . Lara's theme played at NMA Saddleback qualifier By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA ,JUNE 15 Saddleback Park was the site for the third NMA Grand National Championships qualifying race. The race was held on the back track instead of on the International track in which the World Mini GP was on. This track had a lot of natural terrain with plenty of steep uphills and downhill drops. It was enough to give a good challenge to all of the racers. . Many of these minicycle racers like to go for the trophies in several different classes. One of these riders was Chris La ra . He has three different Suzukis and it seemed like he was always on the track, This must cost his father Pablo a lot of bucks but then again he just won $500 while visiting Vegas for the first NMA event. Lara was the holeshot king and would get out ahead right away . He had two victories. This included the Junior Cycle Stock Novice 9-11 event in which he aced out Doug Fisher and ' Sha ne Trittler, Lara also captured the 83cc Stock Novice 9·11 win. Roger Ebling placed second ahead of Mike Peters. Paul Denis and Kurt Hendricksen had a real battle going on in the 83cc Stock Intermediate 12 + class. Denis ended up winning both of the motos but Kurt did better at the start of the race so he was able 10 lead for sometime before Paul made the pass. Denis and Henricksen won overall ahead of Chris Taylor, Russell Winkler and Chris Gables. The fastest Mini class of the day was the !05cc race . Western Regional Champ George Holland picked up this win also and cleaned up in both motos, Ron Lechien of Yamaha came close to George in the first moto while Ric k Hemme was third . It was a tragic second moto for Louie Franco. The race just started and they started to fly down the first hill when Louie Franco went down very hard. They had to carry him off to the hospital. Everyone was sorry to see this happen. They restarted the race and Holland took it from there and Troy Blake trailed him in second while Hemme was third. Overall it was Holland, Hemme. Sam Storer, Lechien and Ken Dunlap. The fastest motorcycle racer of this event was Kevin Steele from Las Vegas . Kevin blew away the 125cc Modified Expert class in style with two firsts ahead of David McGhee and Jim Krumme. Last of all they had a special Father's Day race. This time dad got to see how hard it really is. They dwarfed the little machines. Michael Clifton won the Turkey race and proved to be the fastest. Resu lts PEE WEE STK: 1. King Ricl1afd lite); 2. OCIRMXto Jackman, Dymond By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA,JUNE 12 More and more people are starting to turn on to the OCIR night racing: Now that the weather is starting to cook everybody they are coming out to enjoy a nice cool evening under the lights. Bruce Jackman usually races during the intense heat at Saddleback Pa rk but this time he decided to fly by night. As it turned out Jackman blew away the 125cc Novice class and this more than made it worth his while. You may remember that Taylor Ma rcell has just started to race in this Class and has abandoned the Mini class. He's leaving that for the kids. Marcell won last week but this time he ha d his hands full just trying to kee p u p wit h J ackm a n . Both are on id entical Kawasa ki 125cc machines. Bru ce won the. first mo to and these two were bumping into one another as they were fighting for first. Jackman alm ost went down once as he rammed into Marcell. Jackman took the first moto win over Marcell while Bill Thiebert took third and he was also on a green m achine.
