Gardena Gold Cup ( EXPERTS, JUNIORS, NOVICES) Underdog defeats the odds By Les Ryder Fri.- - July - -18- - -8pm -- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - '- Caruthers local Bert Stephens went all out to prove he is reacy to challenge the "King of the Hill" in Caruthers. When the time came to pick a challenger for the Match Race against Adamo , Randy Tompkins was selected. Stephens came forward and announced he should get a crack at Adamo . After some discuss ion , it was decided that T om pkins and Step hens woul d meet in the Match Race and the winner wou ld meet Adamo in two weeks. By the time the two rid ers made it to the starting lin e for the first race, the spec tators had put in $239 .00 to each rider as an incen tive to win , sort of a repeat of the night before. Tompkins' experience showed as he qu ite smoothly won the first and third races and collected the rewards. Handicap racing is tough on th e back yardage riders when a front yardage rider rides the pole and makes no mistakes. This was the case in the Handicap Main when Rick Farron started in front and finished the same way to collect his win . In the Scratch Main. Stephens was still burning over his defeat in the Match Race and was more determined than ever to show his ability. If an oddsmaker was to predict the ou tcome of a match between Adamo , Buttke, Salyers and Stephens. it would probably be Adamo , Salyers a nd a tossup between Buttke and Stephens for third and fourth . . It was Stephens' determination that upset the odds.
