CA , JUNE 25 Despit e being ill, Mike Bast defeat ed Gene Wood s to take his fourth Scratch Main of the season at Inland Motor cycle Speed way Wedne sday night. Bast jumped ou t front at the start from his numbe r four sta rt ing position a head of Woods , Denny Pyaett and J oh n Sa ndona . Woods went to the outsi de groove a nd pull ed even with Bast as they crossed the line at the en d of lap one. Bast had the lead back by himself as they ent ered tu rn one on th e second lap with Woods hot on his heels. Woods conti n ued to try the high side through lap two and th en droppe d to the inside coming ou t of tu m two on la p three . Bast was not to be bea ten as he shut Woods down on t he inside on the final lap an d a half to cla im the victory, Follow ing Bast a nd Woods to the checker ed were Pyaett and Sandon a. Woo ds . who had his new leathers sto len th e previou s week, pu t on a s pectacu la r show weavin g in and out of t ra ffic to win his first Handic ap Main of th e season a t IMS . Woods jumped the gun from the 50 on the first attemp ted start and then jum ped it on the second at tem pt a t a start alongw ithJim "The Animal " Fishback. The th ird try proved to be the charm as everybo dy got off clean with Derek Gag e m oving ou t front followe d by Kurt Stromm er , Ste ve Columb o, Jo hn San dona , Woods and Fishb ac k. Sandona got by Columb o in the fou rt h tum on t he first lap . with Woods getting Columb o at th e end of lap one. Woods moved to the ou tside of Sandon a and then moved to the m iddle of the track to go betwee n Gage and Stromm er in tum two on lap three to take th e lead. 28 Sandon a follow ed Woods through for second with Fishbac k mo ving in to third . Sandon a was unable to catch Woods bu t held off Fish back for second . Columb o finished fou rth followed by Gage and Stromm er who fell on the fin al lap . Da ve Rose fou nd Secon d Division Scra tch Racing to his likin g as he took his second victory of the season. Rose, who sta rted on th e pole , jumped out fron t at the start ahead of Ma rk Detters (return ing fro m a broken arm), Paul Belisle a nd Greg Ayers. Detter used the cushion to pu ll even and momen tarily took the lead going down the back chute on la p one. Rose had th e lead ba ck by turn three and was unhead ed j he rest of th e way. Detter hung on for second with Belisle fighting off Ayers for third . Eddie Clark jumped ou t fro nt at the sta rt of the Third Division Main on ly to see the red flag fly in tu m one wher e Ed Cas tro and Jeff Havack o wen t d own .' On the restart Clark again took th e lead and it was again red flagged in tu m one as Castro's ha ndl ebar got hooked on the back of Victor Robled o's bike sending bo th down . On the th ird start, Cla rk again jumped out front and held his breath through tum one. Much to Clark's delight , everybo dy got th rough turn one. Clark held the lead until he bob bled comi ng ou t of tu m four on la p on e giving the lead to Rob ledo . Robled o quic kly opened a sizab le lea d a nd was uncha llenged the rest of th e way. Clark hung on for second follo wed by Castro , Havacko, Miller and Bryce Eiklbe rger who raced his first night of Speedway. Ala n Ch ristia n missed tonight 's action with a case of the stom ach -flu b ut will ret urn to action t his W ednesd ay. Charl ie won ' his first Handicap Main event here on Garden a's qu arter -mil e track, along with a cou ple of other wins just for good measure . Coming off the gO -yard line . he ran tight behind Dwight Hill , passing u nder him on t he second lap. Thirdlap act ion brough t Leni Faas hot on Morse's ta il with Keith Ch risco runnin g hard behind them . Last lap action showed Morse still keeping his lead over Faas while Lance King. Ascot pro. snuck by Chrisco in the very last tu m stealing third place. Before the race, Lance said that he plans to go to Englan d on July 10 to Cradley Heath where he'll be riding a W eslak e th ey will have for him whil e he sees if he likes th e English track. Lance has never been out of . th e Uni ted Sta tes and though he is looking forward to his tr ip . he say's he will definitely be back in three weeks to build up enough points so he can ride in the Na tionals. Also, 2g ' year-old Keith Chrisco will be leaving in one month for Cradley Heath to spend some time with Bruce Penhal l, while he sees if he likes the British style of racing. Keith also has plans to go to New Zealan d after the end of the season for two or three months to get the feel of racing all around the world. Chrisco , with barely two and a half years of . racing experie nce has certain ly come a long way in Speedw ay. Just this yea r he started out on the gO-yard line in Second Division. and now he is one of the top First Division riders starting out here at Ascot on the 50-yard lin e. Keith has built up quite a follow ing withhis good looks . stylish racing and ' . is always a pleasur e to talk to . as is King. The Feature Match race this week pitted Denny Pyeatt against Frank Adamo . two very consiste nt riders here on the quarter -mile. Pyeatt pulled out first with Frank right behind for a lap and held on to his lead to take the . checke red by a respect able margin . Coincid entally, in the Scratch Cons i, due to bike problem s, the only two riders were Adamo and Pyeatt. where Frank showed Denny he could win also . The Second Division Main brough t some fast -paced action as Pat Hawley , looking superb all night. shot out front first and held a fair lead for three laps till he lost control in tum three. .Dennis Bransfo rd found no difficul ty in taking advanta ge by pulling into the numbe r one position , holding on long enough to take the win with "Fast" Eddie Thurm an riding a hard second followed by Jeff Allison all the way from the 40 -yard line in his first time out this year. The Scratch Main brough t Leni Faas to the pole position and next to him the Handic ap winner . Charlie Morse. Third was the " Little Ghos t" Lance King and on the outside the "Chrisco Kid ." Keith Chrisco . The tapes flew up and King was gone. First lap action was King out front of Chrisco followed by Faas. The second lap remain ed the same except for King stretch ing his lead by a bit.
