Steele tipped over in the third tum, handing second over to Fitch, Troy found a way by Underwood on the third tour. who slowed considerably after a crash and the heat got to him . Steele was on the gas and also by Underwood as he pulled up to Troy's rear fender on the white-flag lap. As Fitch flew off the treacherous 20foot high, man-made mountain that sits in the center of the course, the soft dirt at the top gave way , which sent · Troy hurtling down the face of the hill , at speed, in a lock-to-lock tankslapper, The resultant bail-off gave the moto win to Steele, who barely escaped the crash from his close secondplace position. Troy, although visibly shaken, put it back together to score second ahead of Underwood , who fin ished a distant third. In 125cc Pro moto two the hot riding Underwood again holeshot the buzzing Yamahas of Steele and Fitch. Underwood led for two laps until Steele blasted by on the start/finish straight. Steele was winning and pulling away until a seized motor robbed him of victory at the midway point, Fitch moved by Underwood and int o the lead he extended to the checker enroute to the overall win and the lion's share of the 125cc Pro purse, Underwood finished the moto second, with Steele pushing across for th ird , which combined with his firs t moto win , enabled Steele to collect the runner-up paycheck. The 250cc Pro race was a Kevin Steele benefit. Kevin " Ginzler" Gashler holeshot the first 250cc Pro moto with Troy Fitch, Kevin Steele and Sportsman Cycle Suzuki man Mark Hitechew in rapid pursuit. "T he Animal" and Fitch both blew by "Ginzler," with Steele stretching his lead over Fitch to the checkers. Hitechew moved up to within striking distance of Gashler, but couldn't quite close the gap on the fast Yamaha pilot, Steele holeshot the second 250cc Pro heat and was long gone with the moto victory and overall winner's paycheck, Hitechew, Gashler and Fitch gated be hind Steele and were locked in a titanic duel for second. Gashler took Hitechew on a rough line th rough the triple-jumps, but Hitechew returned the favor when Gashler swung wide on the start/finish straight. At the height of the Hiteehcw/Gashler dice, Fitch flew by both riders over the triple ju m ps and held it on to post second overall. Gashler out-braked Hitechew as they entered a 900 tum and motored off to capture third overall, Hitechew pulled in 150 yards behind Gashler to score fourth with a fine performance in his first-ever Pro endeavor. The Over the Hill Gang was there in force and were definitely the life of the party. Phast Phil Kolislte (Mai) holeshoe the first moto and pulled out to his usual large lead before he was reeled in by Dumpin' Dan Pike (Mai) and Raunchy Ray Charlesworth (Mai). Raunchy Ray turned up the burner and took Dumpin' Dan and the first moto win. In moto two Raunchy Ray railed the holeshot while Dumpin' Dan crashed himself out of contention. Raunchy held on for the moto and overall win with Dumpin' Dan collecting himself enough to post second. Products 1401 PIoner Wrt #14 • EJ ClIjon. Up, Up and away for Turner at CRC Saddleback MX By Lee Taylor ORANGE, CA ,JUNE8 A floc k of racers descended on Saddleback Park and discovered a new International Track, one used for the National races and one everyone has hopes of racing again in the near future, Ron Turner, riding for Suzuki Motor Corporation, put his bike in flight for a pa ir of aces in the 250cc Pro race, Put wings on Turner's Suzuki and the Air Force would have a new secret weapon, While other racers were checking suspension and gearing, Turner's crew was checking flaps and la nding gear , Turner flew so high over the new jumps he had to get clearance from flight control. In both motos Turner took over the lead in mid-air. The first mota found a heavy duel for control between Yamaha-mounted Kurt SofIta in the lead with Turner alongside. After assuming command Turner led a squadron of bikes over a tight and twisting course. Kawasakimounted Andy Guth made his bid for second and held on until the last lap when he went down, along with third place rider Lance Moorewood. Soflta was there and simply zoomed back into second, holding finn for the last lap with Eric MacCracken rounding out the top three. The second time the bikes became airborne, Cycle Works' Gary Truesdill was engaged in a dogfight with Turner for command, As before, Turner got the clearance he needed and took charge in mid-air. Truesdill found a pack of bombers on his tail , all out to take second from him. Juan Benavidcz "s Can-Am was in third with Donald Draskovich running fou rth and MacCracken in fifth , All were just inches apart, Soflta then flew up through the pack, taking over fourth . By touchdown, Benavidez and Drasko vich were engaged in a duel for second that carried them down to the end , Turner em erged the victor, Sofka collected second place dollar with a 24 ride and third went to Draskovich with a 4-3 ride. Throughout both divisions of the 125cc Beginners, absolute mayhem erupted. Bogged down in a section of the track that can only be described as "Gonzo Gulch, " the Beginners were forced to develop unique riding styles in climbing out and onto a steep offcamber tum. Several racers tried to run alongside their bikes , pushing with one hand and cranking the throttle with the other. Some tried pushing with both feet while sliding off the rear of their mounts. Periodically a rider wou ld pop out of the gulch, only to promptly vanish. Several racers gave up and created their own escape route around "Gon zo Gulch." After two maddening motos Darren Mcfall brought his Suzuki home in first for the first d ivision of 125cc Be-
