The first event run was the "W orld Championship Potato Pick -Up ." AI· though Leroy Kyge r won the event , Robby Purvines got the ch eers when he dove off his mount at speed superman· style in a heroic effort to ge t his potato together. Not satisfied with that stunt , in the "W orld Championship" heat he was so pumped that he almost looped -out on the start , ran side-saddle with the bike do ing "Hi-He Silvers" in a successive com ed y of near disaster s all th e whil e with th e th rottle WFO . Unbelievably, he rode it out to finish third behind Fred Hansen , Jr. The "W orld Championship Team Race" was a sadists' and masochists' del ight. The riders lined up five abreast , blasted the 30 or so ya rd to pick up their partners . then berserked back where they had to drop them in a predetermined circle. Things started out quietl y but soon lost control and by the "World Championship" moto the buddy riders were literally leaping off th e hurtling machines in a mad scramble to get inside the circle. The Kevin and Michael Welch brother team were running dead even with siblings Daryl and Bryan Folks but lost the "W orld Championship" wh en Michael's momentum carried him through the ci rcle although he did touch-down first. Little Bryan stayed in the circle and was jubilant with the narrow victory. The Purvines - not to be outdone - made a gallant effort to win but were hampered when Robby bailed off for the circle and got h is leg too dose to the rear wheel which Ron inevitably ran over. The game Rob by mornen tarily grimaced in pain but was soon up to the applause of the thrilled spec, ra te rs. It was a great day with cheers and la ughs for a ll and the big winner was Groundshaker member Dou g Tichenor. The Groundshakers donated the proceeds of the event to help Doug replace his motorcycle which was stolen while he worked a checkpoint at th is yea r's Las Vegas "400." motocross. Also there for the riders was a totally revised International track, different from any other in the past. The three best riders in the Professional ranks were Willy Simons, Todd Clark , and Bill Hagen, with wins in the 125 , 250 and 500cc Pro classes respectively. In the one-two-fives, Simons proved to be too much for the class to even keep up with , let alone beat , and the Yamaha support rider was coming back off of a month's layoff from racing due to a back injury suffered in th e Soboba Gran Prix. Both rnoto victories were his , by nearly half a lap . Second overall went to John Langhammer, a new Pro just moved up from the Intermediate ranks this yea r, while third was taken by Donnie Best , another Intermediate recently turned Pro. As for Todd Clark, there was no dou bt as to whether he deserved the win, as he took both motos going away. Ji m Coffey pu t in a third and a second for second overa ll, wh ile R icha rd Bunch , who dropped from a second in his first moto to a seventh in the second . grabbed th ird . , Bill Hagen was another doublemoto victor. but he had Bob Schu lz knocking at the door for quite a while in the two motos. Schulz couldn't match th e speed of Hagen at d ie end , however. and at th e checkered he fell short each tim e. Dave Haugh , prepar· ing for a trip to Australia to compete in the country's national championship, took th ird with a pair of threes . In the Novice and Intermediate ac tion , the I 25cc sportsmen were di vided into two di visions in each category. In the first division of 125cc Intermedi ates, Pat McConnell took both motos and the overall , trailed by Gary Reich enbach both times, and Chris Morton . Division two went to Louie Franco , with his 1·3 moto scores to go along with his win in the Mini Experts. Following Franco in the overalls were George Galinda . winner of the second moto, and Robert Go nzales. One-two five Novice division one belonged to John Alexander, with a second to Da n Cherrier in the first moto a nd a win in the second to ta ke the overall as Cherrier dropped to sixth his seco nd try a nd second overall. T hird went to Mike W olfe . In second division action. Sa m m y Auqian, Ro b Mansfield and R alp h Usher took the top th ree slots. Richa rd Ising started off the 250cc Intermediates' first division with a win over Greg Taylor, but Taylor came back in the second moto to make a la te
