Rollie Smith (Husl. / Olson, Widick blast Old Timers MX By Bob Alloy VALENCIA. CA , MAY 18 Fifty-two Old Timers showed up at the Dunes to make this one of the best turnouts of the year. The weather was great, we were great, 34 and all together it was a fun -filled day on th e International track. Starting out with the Masters division, it was Black ie Lewis out there with the holeshot , and Blackie was in charge for th e next five laps . Then Marvin Olson took over. All th ose sa ndy whoop-de -docs d idn't detou r Marv as he flew over all the rough track . Blackie placed second, and following Blackie was Marshall Jennings. The second rnoro began with Jennings ou t there in "fron t and he kept up the action until lap five. Once aga in Olson overcame all and took th e lead a nd held on for t he win . J ennings found his way for . second, and Jim Beltinckwas in with a . th ird place win. The Expert d ivision had lots of , action . Dick Frampton was the man in the leading posit ion but by lap two Dick Mosley was out front. Dick just kept in that groove and won . Doing a lot of the right th ings at the right time brought Bob Millner into a second place win . Despite a lousy sta rt" Tom W idick came in looking good and in thi rd place, Following Widick was Herb Townsend with a fou rth. The second moto sta rted out with T im Cash in the lead but by lap two it was W idick's. Widick continued to stay number one and cla imed that prize. Millner rode smoothly to second place. Taking third place. honors was Mosley ahead of Dick Frampton. George Spearing pulled the holeshot in the Amateur class and from then on the action was his right to 'the first place win. Don Hobson worked ' his ' way into a nice second place win, followed byJerry Scott and Hal Grady. Hobson was the man out there with the power as he led the Amateurs for seven laps to take first place win in the second moto. Buzz Moeller did a lot of passing and good riding and took a well-earned second. Jerry SCOll carne in th ird. . Grabbing the holeshot for Novices in moto one was C. Holt. Holt kept this up until lap six when -Larry Caldron took the lead and kept things that way to win first. Ho lt was there for second, and Larry Hughlich cla imed third. Fourth place was won by Dal Calais. Once again Holt ' took the lead as he had in moto one, but he wasn't passed this time around, So it was Holt with first followed by Calais, Bob Alloy and Larry Escamilla. Results MASTERS: 1. MacCracken cracks fifth Memorial Day GP By Ron Lawson CORONA , CA , MAY 26 'Alt hough the turnout was down somewhat from last year's count, the fifth annual Memorial Day GP still drew an impressive 600 ent ries to Corona Raceway for the Racing Association of Cycle Enthusiasts spons ored event. On ce again th e ' six mile course had qu ite a few interesting features such as the Corkscrew , Hangman's Tree, Dave's Uphill jump, Chicken Delight , I'm a Dip, and Skateboard Alley. . The program kicked off in the morning with the Min is and 100s, followed by th e combined Pro race. On the first row it was the Open Pro class and when the flag dropped , Matt Tedder (Suz) was the man to manage the dead -engine, stradd le the front wheel start best . Coming off the line next was the 250cc Pro class and there the holeshot was taken by Cycle World's Don Griewe (Kaw). When the 125cc Pros took off it was Troy Manning of Dale's Modern Cycle who took over. At the end of lap one, very little had changed in any of the top spots. Tedder had a strong lead while Tom Burgess (Yam) was holding on to second. The notable change was Eric MacCracken (Yam) who had gotten off the line poorly, but was now in fou rth place, close behind Keith Fearing (C · A) . The next time they came around , MacCracken was in second and slowly reeling Tedder in . In the 250c c action , an all out race had de veloped between Griewe and Juan Benavidez (C-A). The two of them had pulled far away from third place Marty Miller (Suz) and were engaging in a on e-on-one war. Benavidez got around Griewe, then on the second lap his silencer caine off, making the bike run poorly. Having similar troubles was Greg Zitterkopf (Mai): who was pressuring Phil Thorstensen for the fou rth spot. Zitterkopfs pipe carne apart , but he inherited the number four posit ion on the next lap anyway when Thorstensen dropped out of the race. Zitterkopf might have come up even farther , as he had closed in on Miller, but he stopped on one lap to , make sure he hadn't been disqualified when his machine became unmuffied . He hadn't been, so he got back in the race to remain behind Miller the rest of the way. In the meantime, Manningliad built a strong lead in the 125cc class . Craig Gormley (Yam) was the only one . : within striking distance, but Craig Dale was coming on strong from the rear. At the halfway point, Gormley crashed and dropped back to eighth, and then Manning duplicated the act and fell back to third. This left Dale and Troy Lee (KTM) in front and they " stayed fa irly close together all theway to the end. In the final laps of the race, Tedder was passed by MacCracken for the Open class lead , and Griewe did the same to Benavide z, reta king the 250cc lead. Benavidez dropped out of the ra ce on the last lap, giving Miller the number two spot over Zitterkopf while Fred Conover (Kaw) netted fourth over Andy O rescanin (Kaw). The top five at the fin ish of the 125cc Pro class were Dale, Lee, Manning, Jeff Edwards (Suz) and Gary Scheidler (Yam ). The sportsman results haven't been released yet, but will be in the near future . Wats.on, Baugh toughatCMC Speedway 117 MX By Rod Eschenburg CHULA VISTA , CA , MAY 21 While Pro rider Clint Hardick went his usual two for two in the 250cc and 500cc classes at the weekly 1980 Coke Championship Series at Speedway 117 , it was the Intermediates and Juniors who gave the fans the real action . Sensational new 250cc Intermediate Dan Watson (Yam) once again blasted a good field of riders to notch his sixth straight moto win , but slow starting Dav id McGhee (Yam), in his first night sta rt of the year, gave notice that he ' can do the job once he gelS the starts down . McGhee got off slowly in both motos and by the time he was into second Watson was just too far out front . Watson was only pressed in the first moto as Intermediate point leader Ron Lounsbury led the first few laps, and it looked like just maybe Watson had met his match, but no , Watson just blew him away , and after Lounsbury encountered mechanical problems it was no contest. The 250cc Juniors ran an instant replay of last week's race with Hondamounted Richard Baugh once again grabbing a tie -breaker win over Rick Kenyon (Yam), As it was in the preceeding week . Kenyon ran away with the first moto with Baugh battling his way up from a dismal start to get into second with not enough laps remain ing . Then in the second round, Baugh grabbed the holeshot, and it was Ken yon's tum to play catch up , which he did , but onc e again the laps ran out. Baugh has now moved into a very tight second place in the 250ccJunior CocaCola standings, though , as point leader, Richard Mannschrech had trouble in the second moto and ended up way back at the checkered flag . Once again the always wild 125cc Juniors were just that - wild! Kawasaki .rider David Crowson battled his way to a two for two win over Roy Smotherman and Scott Bowman, but it was in doubt all the way in both motos, especially the second one where Crowson had to come through lots of traffic for the win. And ' finally, Barona Oaks rider Mitch Palmer (Suz) made his first -ever night . motocross race a winner as he went two for two in the Mini Juniors over point leader Kevin Nolan.
