Benavidez bombs, Bertha bounces at Corona By Ron lawson CORONA, CA, MAY 23 It was an unusua lly cold night for this time of the year, but that didn't decrease the rider turnout at Corona Raceway; in fact more people came out to spectate just for that reason. You see , it was time for the second annual Corona Wet T-shirt contest and the temperatures made it certain that everything, especially the audience, would stand up when the cold water found its mark. Once again six examples of nature's generosity (and in some cases overkill) stood before a crowd of hooting muddy motocrossers to show what they had . Three finalists were quickly chosen by the mob, as determined by the amount of noise they made for each contestant. Then the competition got narrower as one of the three ran out of goose bumps and had to go put on a coat. Contestants number one and three were left (Silicone Sally and .Olga Overload, respectively) and the contest was coming down to the wire when a surprise decision was rendered by the judges. ' In spite of Olga's larger payload, Sally was named Corona's wet -T queen for 1980 . As an added attraction , R .A .C .E . officials held a motocross on the same night. The 250cc Pro class proved to be little trouble for Juan Benavidez and his support Can-Am. He led every lap of both motos on his way to the overall win while Marty Miller of Redlands Suzuki netted both second places. In the first round Benavidez took off while Miller struggled to stay on top of Andy Orescanin (Kaw). Near the end of the race, Miller developed a slight lead, but then he caught a flat tire and had to slack off his pace. Second place still went to Miller with Oresca nin following ahead of Keith Williamson (Yam) and Do n Griewe (Kaw). In the next moto, Benavidez was again on top, this time with Mark Ba rn es (Yam) in second. O.n the second lap Mille r mo ved into second a nd remained there throughout the race while Mark Howard (Yam) took over third. It wasn't long, however, before Howard began to fade and Griewe became the owner of the number three spot. The checkered flag saw Williamson in the fourth spot once again with Fred Conover (Yam) in fifth. The overall results read the same as the last moto. 33
