Christian gets number eight at Costa Mesa By Ken Kellogg COSTA MESA , CA , MAY 30 Harry Oxley probably goes .to bed " at night dreaming of races like this and at last he had his dream come true. The best in one scratch race, and it wasn't even the Nationals. In the Scratch Main event it was Alan Christian. The Record Breaker; Mike Bast , The National Champ; Lance King, the hottest young rider on the circuit and Kelly Moran , fourthplace finisher in The World Finals. All ready to race, the tape went up and to the surprise of few Bast was first into turn one. Coming out of turn two Christian tried to go under him , but their bikes locked and Bast went down taking Moran with him . The race was red-flagged , but Moran was unable to make the restart as he had tire bums on his arm . At the restart, Bast was again first into turn one. Christian was second , but this time Alan was able to just squeeze inside Mike and take the lea d . The rem a inder of the race was a battle between King and Bast. "Crazy" Christian picked up his eighth consecutive Scratch Main win with Bast second and King third. The Handicap Main event brought Steve Columbo to the winners' circle. Steve, who had been riding in Europe, rode from the 20·yard line and held off "Bad Brad" Oxley for the win. Oxley rode from the 40'yard line, worked his way through traffic and had there been one more lap , Brad may have won. The only rider riding from the 60-yard line at Costa Mesa Christian, finished third. Alan a lways rides a remarkable race an d although he finished only third, Christian showed the fans some smoot h rid ing . Several times he would ride th e rail past another rider into a turn, then right out of the turn would pass them on the inside. Finishing fourt h was John Sandona . John Foster, riding from the 10-yard line , Jeff Tomlin from the 30 and Dave Van Horn showed the crowd some exciting Division Two racing. Foster did a nice job of moving through traffic, something that is at times harder to do than in First Division. For Tomlin, a second is really quite good since he is a back yardage rider and trying for that hardto -find spot in First Division. . The Third Division Main gave Jeff Havacko a chance to get back in the winning groove. Jeff is a good rider and has shown he can ride under pressure. He was never really challanged, though , but only because he didn't slow down . Second was Dave Rose, a lO·yard line rider with Tom Conrad third . Bast was not totally recovered from his illness this week , but next week he'Il be back in full racing form and set to stop Christian from making it nine in a row. Bast won't be the only one back to test Christian. Coming back from England to race is Denny Sigalos. • Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Alan ChristIan ; 2. Mike Bast; J . Lance King ; 4 . Kelly Moran.
