Jr. in Superdome. 520 Amateurs attack Superdome MX By John Rannikko NEW ORLEANS, LA , MAY 41980 Even whil e the Pros were riding the Sunday round of Supercross at the New Orleans Su perdom e, the Amateur Supercrossers were first official final event of the evening on a Suzuki in the Minibike Junior class . There were two do uble winners at the Superdome this year. Todd Bray cleaned house on an E. C. Birt Suzuki and Yamaha in the Mini Senior and mini Stock classes respectively. The other double winner was Phil Reed of Sherwood. AR , riding Hondas to wins in the Open and 250cc Intermediate classes. Glenn Lofley , Jr. of Plant City , FL , on a Trim/Castre-sponsored Yamaha took all the gold in the Open Expert class. Can-Am riding Roger Brown of Perrin Cycles in San Antonio, T X , was the only one to make a challenge on the lead , but a tangle wit h haybales kept him from getting the leader. A distant third was T im W agn er (Hon) of Garland, TX , fol lowed by Lo uis Keb ert (Kaw) and Mark H utcheson (Mai). In addition to the Lafley/Brown battle, a great ra ce went on for third between Wagner, Kebert and Hutcheson. Hi -Po int-sponsored Yamaha rider , Todd Hempstead of St . Petersburg, FL , took 100cc honors ahead of Scooter Stafford, on the Yamaha Support program, and Tim Butler of Ayle,TX, riding a Team Race Ready Yamaha. The Yamaha trio pulled away from the rest of the class , earning the tallest of the ten place trophies with a five-footer going to Hempstead. Yamaha completely dominated the top seven places in the 100cc class. in the pits and pa rkin g lots preparing their minds, machines and equipment for a 4 p .m. takeover of the 'd ome. When the pros cleared out, Jerry Surber's crew m oved in to set up for staging, scoring , starting and running the event for 520 riders.
