I=: :l ~ Kenny Roberts ran off with his third 500cc World Championship Road Race Series victory on France's Paui Ricard circuit, making the May 26 event a three-for -three total on his 'SO scorecard. Suzuki-mounted Marco Lucchinelli had posted fast qualifying time, with Roberts' Yamaha clockingin second. But in the race. Roberts rode unchallenged from a slow eighth place start to a 5.11 second win over eventual second placer Randy Mamola. Suzuki-mounted Mamola and Lucchinelli staged the battle of the event, with LucchinieIli following the American across the finish line only 0.41 seconds behindlln the point standings. Roberts hoids 45 over a tie between Mamola and Lucchinelli at 22 each. Fourth is another tie between Takazumi Katayama and Graziano Rossi at IS. Johnny Cecotto is sixth with 15 points. Rounds one and two of the 1980 AMAINATC Observed Trials Championship Saries took place over the Memorial Day Weekend, P.I.T.S. staged the first event May 24 near Oroville. CA. and Curt Comer. formerly of Alabama now residing in Colorado. won on his Montese Cote. The series moved to southern California for a May 26 date. and Oregon's Brad Skreen. also Montesa-mounted. topped It. Skreen leads the series. Complete coverage next week. He's now waiting for the cuts to heal before undergoing an operation to correct the broken kneecap . Skip says he's through racing, that this accident and injury was the last straw.
