Sixty-five riders , backed by the Washington Old T imers and three support classes, participated at the new T hurston County ORV Sports Park. In - a weekend filled with great racing, the fifth moto in the Expert class provided some of the closest competition . Canadian Chad Sinclair took the lead followed by Everett Waltrnire and Ken Shandrow, both from Washington. Shandrow got by Waltrnire on the third lap and then took over first place on lap fou r. On the sixth lap. three riders made a charge a t Waltmire for third place. Steve Hall and Steve Glenn, both from Washington. and Doug Hauck from Canada all hung together for three more laps when Glenn got around Hall. At the end of twelve laps , Waltrnire had held on to third and Glenn had to settle for a close fourth, The Amateur class was a tossup between Duane Barnhart and Dayton Hickson. both from Washington. Going into the last moto , only two points separated them for first and second place. Twenty-six riders went into the first turn and coming out on top were Canadian Lyle Miller. Richard Thomason and Barnhart, At the end of nin e laps , these first th ree places remained the same. giving Barnhart the overall victory. Racing in the Novice class was as competitive as a ny. Greg Stowe led the way around the 1.5·mile sand track in five ou t of six motos. For some of the riders, this was their first motocross experience.
