Maultsby and Finger head River City MX action By Karel Kramer AUSTIN, TX, MAR. 29 Austin had racing as usual at the recently renamed River City Night Motocross Track. Well, the racing was not quite usual because the Expert classes were yawners and all the action was in the 250cc Novice and Intermediate classes. Kevin Maultsby, just up from the , 125cc class on a San Marcos Cycle Center 250cc Uni-Trak Kawasaki , de molished the 250cc Novices in his first 250 ride! Saturday was also his first overall win . Mike Marshall (Ya m) grabbed the holeshot in rnoto one . Maultsby showed some of the finer points of bar banging as he hit the tum about eigh th and exited right behind Marshall, Thirdplace Trent Bowers on an antique Maico was moving like he wanted the who le thing, but left the race with mechanical problems on lap three . Around the same time, Maultsby made his move and took Marshall's lead away on the hill, putting him in the lead for good. Mike Hurd (Yam) made the final changes in the top three as he got around Marshall for second. John Kalmbach and Ron Kinney showed Maultsby the way around the tum in the second moto. It didn't buy them much time as Maultsby's green meanie put the motor on both before one lap was over. Maultsby led to the end followed by Kinney (Hon) and Marshall. The overall finishes were the same. Chuck Loftin grabbed a far from secure holeshot in the 250cc Intermedia te class. Jerry Farmer and Sam Finger were right behind. The fourth gladiator. Moe Van Kirk was recovering from a small detour in the first turn where he dragged Bobby Morris' Yamaha off the track. Van Kirk got rid of the Yamaha he was bulldogging, recovering from last to fourth in two la pst Meanwhile. Loftin was holding his advantage but Finger was gnawing on Farmer's fender. There was plenty of bar banging, but the positions stayed constant to the finish . Moto two looked like a rerun with Loftin's Ho nda out front foilowed by Farmer's Yamaha . Van Kirk piloted his Suzuki to third and it was Finger's tum to pla y catch-up from the first turn , Steve Zettner turned some heads as he turned some fast laps in fourth on a Kawasaki 250 thumperl Zenner's thumper fell prey to Honda horsepower and Finger moved close enough to Van Kirk to ca use trouble. Finger's battle with Van Kirk brought the m up on Farmer and both tried to pass him at the same time! Fa rmer wasn't too enthused and all th ree went up the hill side by side , but only Fa rmer and Finger came down the other side . Van Kirk recovered bu t Was relegated to fourth at the finish . Finger got around Farmer ab out the same time as Loftin pancaked in a tum. Finge r held onto his new fou nd lead to win ahead of Farmer and Loftin . Results MINI JR: 1. Robert Seward (Yam); 2. Barb Russell(Suzl. l Stackable bags ' four Whitney wins By John Rannikko LAKE WH ITNEY , TX , AP R. 27 The biggest problem taxing the Texan MXer's m ind these days is deciding which track to ride. With two tracks in the same area with a race on the same day, the turnout here was less than usual. The Whit ney MXers were treated to an especially well-prepared track which had retained moisture from th e previous week's ra in and cool temperatures. The track surface had been groomed to perfection along with the addition of a supercrossstyle jump to slow down a previously too fast straightaway. For those who like to fly, the double jum p in the infield area had been built up to accommodate the highfl yers. Steve Stackable brought PDQ 250 and 465cc Yamaha monoshockers to wage a racing war on the 250 and Open Experts. After sorting out some electrical problems on the 250, the "Stack" struck gold in all four moros of both classes to post a pair of overalls. Holeshot honors for the first 125cc Expert moto went to Robert Grunsfeld (Suz), but the battle for the lead became a showdown between Mike Br ownlee (Kaw) and Michael Martin (Yam). The Brownlee/ Martin twosome moved ahead of everyone 'til about mid-more when Martin didn't come around anymore. Brownlee just had to ride it out to the checkers for the win, Ronald Dawson (Suz) had steadily worked up from an early posit ion far in back to fin ish second ahead of Grunsfeld .
