CoronaMX: Benavidez bounces back while Blount boogies By Ron Lawson CORONA , CA , MAY 2 There was no holding back CanAm support rider Juan Benavidez at Corona Raceway as he flew to two moto victories· in the 250cc Pro class . The onl y rid er who even attempted it was Marty Miller (Suz) who held th e lead for th ree laps of th e first moro , but soon fou nd himself sta ring a t a d isappearing orange rear fende r. Then Miller for got a bou t Benavidez as Don Griewe (Ma i) started attacking from the rear. It took th e rest of th e n ine lap ra ce, but Griewe eventually managed to get around Mille r for th e number two spot , and he stayed there all th e way to the checkered flag. Taking fourth after a terrible start was Greg Zitterkopf (Mai) while T ed Hoyt (Yam) finished fifth over Steve Bauer (who crashed h is Honda in the early laps ) and Phil Thorstensen (Yam) . Benavidez was pumped and ready to go when he lined u p for th e next m oto , In th e last few weeks he had gone through so m a n y d isappointments with broken bikes a nd crashes that he wasn't about to let this one slip th rough his fing ers. He took th e lead from John Greenway (Hon) ea rly in th e first lap and then started to pull away. Miller was in third but then Griewe came up to pass him aga in , and then Greenway two laps later. W ith Benavid ez and Griewe beginning to pull ahead somewha t, th e main battle sh ifted to the race for third . Greenway was working ha rd to hold off both Miller and Bauer until the halfway point when Bauer found a line around Miller and then promptly crashed into Greenway. That suited Miller just fine as he cruised by into third place while Thorstensen moved into fourth ahead of Hoyt , which is the way they finished . The only change in the overall results was Hoyt edging Thorstensen out of fourth place money . Brent Blount (Ya m ) took a double win in the 125cc Pro class after dicing in the early laps with Rick Maki (Yam) . Maki took the first rnoto holeshot but Blount got by him on the second lap and then pulled ahead. Mike Edson m oved into third when Andy Northrup began having tr ouble, and then stayed there throughout the race . In the final laps Maki began to adjust to the track and moved up somewhat on the leader, but it was too late to make a challenge. Blount was on top of every lap of the next round. Maki had trouble, crashing several times , but wound up seco nd again ahead of Edson. You're on the favorite part of your favorite road, this time everyt hing is right for you to really get some use out of this superbike. You've see n the pictures in the magazine, you know how far this baby can lean over and how fast it will run in the quarter. Where is the photographer for Cycle Star magazine, this is going to be a cover shot ride. That 's how you feel. Is that just a little gravel in that next right hander? What is this dark spot in the asphalt just ahead, oil?, brake fluid ?, a new patch in the road? OK, the first two turn s didn't go that well, but the next one. ..A car is coming, better roll it off just a bit for this one. etc. , etc., etc. Cancel the photographer. Now, how fast ca n you go? You're at the famous Riverside InternationalRaceway. The 2.5 mile, nine tum road course is in front of you. The silent challenge of the track pumps the adrenalin up to the red line. The one piece racing leathers feel secure, you check the helmet strap for the fourth time. The ride leader signals. You swing your leg over the four cylinder Kawasaki. The bike is right, you looked it over before. Race tires, race shocks, flat bars, four into one, hot ignition, Lockhart Oil Cooler, the new giant killer KZ550 is ready for battle. You know that. You fire it up, drop it into firs t and follow the pro around for the first lap to warm up the tires. He gasses it up a little, you're trying to remember where the turns go. Then it really strikes you. There aren't any cars here, no campers, no C.H.P. Ya, you're running 115 mph down this road and no one can touch you! That's the first five mile s, you still hav~ thirty five miles to go. Now , you know how fast you can go.
