Breker breaks the bankatCMC Saddleback MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, MAY 4 Kawasaki-mounted Goat Breker m ade a rare appeara nce a t the recent Continental Mote-sports Club Saddleback event and won every moto he entered in the 250cc and Open Pro classes. The turnout was decent and it was understandable. A $1200 purse was up for grabs to the Pros with payback by moto; Joe Ehler put up $25 per moto for th e winners in th e Pro classes; and Pacesetter, In c. , a vita min manufacturer for athletes, awarded a supply of vitamins to the top places in th e Intermediate and Junior classes. Sunday's action had a twist in the track layout. The gnarly and rocky uphill just before Banzai Hill was used and presented som e big problems for the inexperienced. The Open Pros hit the track for the first moto of the day and Breker took the lead and just pulled away . Follow ing Breker were Robert Marino (Yam) , Val Tamietti (Mai) and Clint Hardick on a Suzuki. Alan Smith (Hus) , the eventual second place finisher was a d istant eighth. In the back ha lf of the pack and now closing on Sm ith was the Golden State Open class Champion Steve Rh yan (Mai). Everyone 's eyes wer e on the Sm ith/Rhyan battle. They . eventually mo ved past Ma rino , Tamietti and Hardi ck to pursue Breker. Sm ith rode three outstanding laps to the checkered flag and 'held off Rhyan who tri ed every possible maneuve r to take over second place. The fina l order was Breker, Smith , Rh yan, Ma rino and Tarnietti. T he second mo to was not much d iffere nt. Breker again got th e holeshot and went on to win. Rhyan, Ron Turner (Suz) a nd Marino were ho t on Breker's heels by th e com pletion of lap on e. Sm ith , who was th e second place finisher in mo to one , was ta ng led up in traffic and was moving up very slowly. The moto ended with little change. Breker won again and took th e overall. Rh yan (3-2) was second overall , then came Marino (4-4) and Sm ith (2-6). Thirty- two riders challenged th e 250cc Pros and in moto one Lance Moorewood (Yam) took the lead and held on until a crash on lap three ena bled Breker to ta ke the lead and never look back. Brian Maloney (Hon) and Tamietti were right behind Breker until "Radical Ron" Turner started to -rnake his move . Turner pushed past Maloney for second as did Husqvama-mounted Gary Ogden, who inched past Tamietti for fourth and finally took over third as Maloney started to fall off the pace. On lap 12, Tarnietti - muscled his way ahead of Ogden for third and onto the flag. Breker won but Turner was closing . Tamietti was thi rd ahead of Ogden and T im Lunde (Yam) was fifth after a bad sta rt . What a ride Ron T u rner put together in moto two. Mal one y had the lead with Turner . Juan Benavidez (C-A), Scott Johnson (Hon) and Breker following . Within no time T u rner took over the lead a nd tried to stretch it ou t while Breker was hung u p in tr affic. W ithin two la ps Br eker had moved ahead of th ree riders and now was second. With Br eker a bou t 10 seconds behind him , on lap eigh t Turner wen t into th e gully and never came ou t. Parked on the side of the tr ack, a discouraged T u rn er sat as his mechanic trie d to pu t th e chain back on . Breker had just won his fourth moto on th e day. Johnson hel d off Benavidez for second and Ogden was fourth . Scott Burnworth contested the 125cc Pros on Mark Barnett's old factory Suzuki. Needless to say , there was no match. Burnworth got to the first tum in moto one about five bikelengths ahead of Bob Kline (Hon) and Bruce McDougal (Hon). Craig Dale (Hon) and Eric Baker (Suz) made up the top five. Coming out of the middle of the pack was the Yamaha-mounted, DGsponsored Todd Peterson. He passed Turner for sixth and pursued Baker. T u rn er than fell and slowed down and was out of competition. While Burnworth kept on pulling away , Peterson kept on picking off riders one b y one . On lap eight, Peterson slid pas t McDougal for fourth wh ile Dale was now _out of the running which left third to Peterson with Kline at his front wh eel. With two laps to go, Peterson made his move and overtook Kline for second and McDougal did the sam e. At the checkered flag , Burnworth won easily, Peterson was second then McDougal, Kline and Baker . Moto two was slightly different. Burnworth again won handily but Rick Johnson (Yam), who crashed off an embankment in moto one and retired, pushed Burnworth to his limit. Turner got his seized machine dialed in for moto two and finished third. Peterson had traffic problems and could only muster up a fourth. This gave Peterson a second in the overalls with a 2-4 finish . Burnworth ob viously won with a I -I total and Kline was third with a 4-5 tally.
