You 30 can come out to the R .A.C.E . motocross every Thursday night and find the OCIR grandstands nearly packed. There were so many Minicycles around tonight that one could've m istaken it for a special Mini rac e. About 25 Mini Beginners showed up and they had to make two divisions for th em . So Cal Kawasaki rider Chris Sparks defeated the others in the Mini Intermediate class who were fellow competitors in the World Mini Grand Prix . Paul Denis on a Suzuki took a first and second place and this gave him second overall ahead of Kurt Henricksen while Steve West was in on the action but was actually a Novice . What looked like it was going to be a spectacular night for Randy Skinner turned out to be not so good after all . Competeing in the 125 Intermediate class, Skinner looked good on his Honda and went for the first moto win . Disaster struck in the final moto though because Skinner didn't finish the moto. Randy has been having some bad luck lately and not too long MINI BEG DIV 2: 1. Ronnie Waat (SUll; 2. Steve Evinger (SUll ; 3. Scott Lohr. MIN IINT: 1. Chris Sparks (Kaw): 2. Paul Dani. (SUll : 3. When the gate dropped the first time, a trio of Yamahas led to the top of the hill with Jeff Stanford, Jim Hoi - ley and Steve Schmitz aboard . Holl ey pressed Stanford as the rwo Yama ha Motor sponsored riders left room behind them. Stanford kept his wheel in fron t until the halfway sign when Holl ey overpowered him in the sand and proceeded to the wire. Whelchel moved steadi ly t hrough heavy traffic from 11rh to fourth in the first few la ps, and then edge by Schmitz for th ird. Chip Johnson (Devo Racing) came from the back to cla im fifth . Schmitz holeshot the second gate with the DG Honda of Ch ris Heisser in pursuit , while Whelchel passed Holley for third . Heisser jumped ahead of the tightly bunched foursome as the y came out of th e sand, only to be put down when the y squeezed together on the narrow side as each rider made his play for the lead. Schmitz climbed back in front with Whelchel breathing down his neck and Holley in third . A couple laps later, Whelchel charged by on the inside of the sand whoops. Schmitz tried to take it back, but Whelchel pulled his lead for the win. Heisser and Jo hnson ba ttl ed for fourth , but both had problems in the last la ps, losing positions. Stanford took the checke red fourth , with J im Pappe and Heisser fifth and sixth. Kirk Sturgeon overcame three weeks of seizur e problems, by putting together back to bac k wins in th e 500cc Pros on his International Yamaha . Tom Kelly (D u r a l u b e / Malcolm Smith ) stretched an early lead while Sturgeon tri ed to tak e second from Doug Lawrence (Suz of S.L. ). Finding an opening, and once by, Sturgeon made up time and slipped into the lead when Kelly stalled momentarily at the tower. Kelly stayed right with him , but at the halfway point Sturgeon set tled into a comfortable lead for the win. Lawrence and Brian Vargus fin ished third and fourth. Sturgeon took the second round from stan to finish. Kelly controlled the number rwo spot as Lawrence came from the back for third with Vargus fourth. Cole Bros . Suzuki-mounted Tracy Oswell took the honors in the 250cc Pros with a 2-1 ride. Team LOP's Mike Brown rode his Yamaha wire to wire , finishing the first moto with a strong lead over Oswell , Rod Richardson and Bill Boyer . Brown didn't show for the second round, and when the gate dropped Richard Bunch (Yam) took off with Oswell behind. They battled over track and sand, well out in front of a duel for third between Boyer and Richardson. Bunch ran into trouble and DNF, giving Oswell a big lead and the win. Richardson moved into second with Bruce Berger third and Boyer fourth . Minis were out in force as they get ready for the stan of the AME National Honda Minicycle series which gets underway May 10-11 at the Dunes. Kawasaki Motor Corp. S3cc Expert Sam Storer won his class with a 2-1 ride. American Honda's Larry Brooks finished second. Johnson, Sturgeon bag CRC night MXopener By Nanette Marie VALENCIA , CA , APR. 25 Nearly 200 riders converged upon the lighted In ternational track of Indian Dunes for the first California Racing Club night motocross of the 19S0 season. Andy Jannings had his problems in the moto and could only manage a fourth ahead of Tom Kelly's KTM . Moto rwo saw Sturgeon aga in grab th e holeshot, but this time Jannings sta yed right on his tai l. Dias and Kelly were no more than a few bikelengths beh ind the whole way, but all four of the front runners failed to switch positions the whole moto, and the finish remained Sturgeon, Jannings, Dias and Kelly. Overall Stur. geon took the la rgest share of the pay. back, with Dias second and Jannings third ahead of Kelly, Taft and Jim Decker. ~ In tight Intermediate actio , Gary Reichenbach took his Tri-Tec Yama ha to a two-mote sweep of the 125s, ahead of Mark Chikasawa's 3-2 and Darrell Melton's 4·6, while Bob Ridgway grabbed both of the Open motos ahead of Jesse James and Mark Martin.
