The most exciting race of the night was the Scratch Consolation as 16year-old Lance King and Kelly Moran dueled side by side the entire--racc;. King beat Moran across the line by inches, with the huge crowd roaring it's approval to both riders at the finish. Jet lag no drag for Schwartz in Ventura By Bill R. Locey VENTURA, CA, APRIL 15 . Santa Barbara's Bobby Schwartz came within two bike lengths of sweeping the program on opening night at the Ventura Raceway a, remarkable feat considering he stepped off a plane from Europe only six hours' before. Another fast young· ster, 'Shawn McConnell, took the Handicap Main. Sharing the spotlight was the track itself. At one-fifth-of a mile (twice as. long as last year) and newly resurfaced, the track is big, fast and allows for plenty of passing, a rare commodity in years past. The enthusiastic promoter, Jim Naylor, was rewarded for his efforts with nearly 2000 cheering fans - the largest speedway crowd here in two years of Tuesdays. After an inauspicious beginning in which three riders went down in the first turn of the first race, the evening was relatively accident· free except for the usual mishaps in Second and Third Division. Keith Larsen cruised to an easy win in the first Handicap Semi. There was a terrific battle for the final transfer' spot between Mike Muntean and young Moose Kennedy for four laps. Muntean crossed over on the final turn aad' won by inch.es-.""-'J ,..... . . J ~ •• ~, :'.1· Schwartz, the ex-Ventura Shark, took McConnell on the final turn to win the other Semi. The Handicap Main was a rerun, except this time young McConnell held off the charging Schwanz on the final turn for the win. Look for big things out of McConnell this year. The Scratch Heats were a series of routs. First Dub Ferrell, then Schwanz, then Lance King and Mike Bast were easy winners. It was over by the second turn in the Semis as Bast and Schwanz won going away. In the Main Event, Schwartz went u~der Bast in Turn Two and cruised to an easy win. The' Champ held off track champion Alan Christian for the wrap-up spot. Schwartz, who looks better every time we see him, will return a few more times 'this season, and with the high level of competition in the British Speedway'Leauge, there's no telling how good the Cradley Heathen is going to be. Many Spellman in new leathers and on a new bike along with Mark Malazzo were the Second Division Heat winners. In the crash·filled Main, credit Spellman' and Troy Archer for nice laydowns in order to avoid the fallen Paul Heffernan. Newcomer Derek Gage won the third and final restart. Dave Rose, who always does well here, added' another trophy to his collection by winning the Third Division Main. Worthy of note was the effort of young Henry Swain of Oxnard who won his heat in tonvincing style in his first-ever race. He also survived bike troubles and a spectacular crash in the Main. This kid is going to be good; remember you read it here first. The noise'resumes Tuesday night. • . Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Bobby Schwartz; 2, Mike Ba.t; 3, Alan Christien; 4. Denny Pyeatt.
