T.E. undergoes club trials By Bruce Mensinger SAN FRANCISQUITO CYN., CA, APR. 13 Trialmasters Joe Ige and Jay .Ebinger are great guys; judging by some ~f the sections they must have be«,;n thinking of pretzels. Sign up was at 9;30 and we chose riding partners; at monthly club trials we generally check each other; that way everyone gets to ride. Section one was for Beginners and Novices; a big M on a steep grassy hillside. The center turn, down to up, was the hard one; nearly everyone took a da b. Section two must have been a real confidence builder since it ended up with the least dabs of any section. In fact the Begin· ners put only one lonely footprint on the sandy soil all day. Section three, a rocky serpentine over sandy cutbanks in and out of a stream made up for that. It was just as I was about to ride this section for the first time that Creg Papazian asked me how I'd done on the first loop; said he'd already ridden two loops. Speedy Papazian. It.turned out when we got to section five that Speedy should be changed to Wrong Way Papazian - in being first to ride section five and apparently in a rush Greg lined up turned around in the gate and rode it twice that way. No matter, he still came up with first place Beginner. Robert Reeder, his riding partner, took second, only one dab behind. The most consistent rider all day was Novice Craig Smith with just one dab each time in section one and one each time in section three for a total of six for the whole day. Nice riding Craig. Second place Novice was Steve Morgan. This was Steve's fmt trial after several years' layoff. Welcome back Steve. Section five was where I had a disagreement with a big rock over who had the right·of·way in the stream; so I crashed. Splashed might describe it bette.r considering how wet I got. Talk about rocks, it was the Amateur and Expert sections that had r-ocks. The sections were all located in a canyon that is wall-to-wall rocks and boulders mixed with down logs. This was one of the canyons V. O. T. E. is using for part of the St. Patrick's two-day trial (now scheduled for Apr. 26-27) and the Southern California National (scheduled for May 26) and it ';s rough. Everybody added up their score cards and prizes were awarded. Derrick Bernard took first Amateur and Gary Conrad second place; from what I heard about the sections and what I've previously seen of the canyon, they earned those T-shirts. Somehow the Experts don't take club trials quite as seriously as points Widick waltzes to Old nmers MX win By Bob Alloy VALENCIA, CA, APR. 6 Summer-like weather, a good MX track and Easter eggs hidden by the Easter Bunny himself, Pat Mosley, and crew all helped to make this a very fme day of MX racing. One of the hidden eggs' entitled the finder to a free entry at the next MX race and the lucky finder was Bob Anderson. Starting things off and sure to be a winner was Ray Sanchez. However, bike problems doomed Ray to a somewhat lower position. Blackie Lewis took over for a while but the real winner, Chuck Woody had to struggle through the pack to claim his victory. The second moto was Sanchez's for a little while bu.t Blackie shot by to take the lead and went on to the win. Ray followed Blackie in for second.. The Expert division started out with Don Buel taking the holeshot and continuing onward for two laps. At this point Tom Widick, who had been continually gaining ground, took the lead and continued on for the win. Dan Sanchez was in there with second, and Dick Frampton came in with third. Moto two saw Widick take an early lead which he just hung onto for the whole time for first place. Expert of sand, Dick Mosley showed us how to do it by coming in second. Sanchez followed Mosley in with his third place position. Lots of action in the Amateur division. First it was Gene Powell, newly mended after shoulder rest and recuperation, in the lead position. After lap two, John Webb was in there to do a leading perlormance but in the end it was George Spearing in there with the big win. Taking second place was Don Hobson and racing in for third was KTM rider Webb. Asker Larnkjaer was in there for the fourth place win. The second moto was no letdown, either with lots of action. Webb started things and held on to his lead for two laps. Spearing then slipped in and commanded things for three laps. Larnkjaer then made the final lead move and held this from lap five all the way to the finishing line. Spearing came in with the seconq place win followed by Hobson in third and Gordon Mathieu in fourth. . Pete Klassen gassed his Yamaha through sand and all for the big win in the first moto of the Novice division. Larry- Caldron was in there for a second place win. The second moto's big winner was Ray Montoya who blasted into the lead on lap three and just kept it up. Following Ray's first was Caldron with a well earned second place. Results MASTERS: 1. Blackie Lewis. EXPERTS: 1. Tom Widick; 2. Dan Sanchez. . AMATEURS: ,. Geo
