Gibson Pro-Links to victory at SSM By Terry Whytal ORANGE, CA, APR. 5 Team Honda star Jim Gibson has surprised a lot of folks with his good finishes at stadium races this year, but not Saddleback's Pros, who've regularly had to take a back seat whenever Gibson shows at his old home track. This Saturday was no exception as Gibson won every race he entered although he did have tough competition, compliments of Yamaha rider Scott Gillman in the 250cc Pro race. In fact the first 250cc Pro race looked like a return to the old days as friends Gibson and Gillman diced for the lead most of the moto and kept the spectators on their feet. Gillman's late race drive would have put away most riders but Gibson fought back, reo gained the lead and w~nt on to fini;sh first. Gillman followed m second while Robert Reisinger piloted his Kawasaki up to third ahead of Yamaha·mounted Steve Martin. . Moto two was just as exciting as DG Yamaha rider Pete Snorteland moved his YZ into the battle for first and kept the pressure on Gillman and Gibson. At the checkers Gibson had a clear lead on the field as Gillman took second, Snorteland third and Reisinger fourth and third overall for the day. Gibson had mostly clear sailing in the Open Pro race as his main com· petition, Kawasaki rider Goat Breker, couldn't quite get it together. "I should have stayed in bed, I'm having a really bad day. I fell three times on the uphill in the first moto," explained. Breker later. Nonetheless Breker went on to finish the day with a second overall with third place going to Yamaha rider Bob Marino and fourth to Eric McCracken on another of the popular YZS. Yamaha rider Don Hoover roosted Edcf. . Michetti 131lltllrU. on the 250cc Intermediate class with back·to·back moto wins in a tradition· ally tough field of competitors. Follow· ing the Hoover dust cloud across the finish line was Yamaha· mounted Bill Harry with two fine second place rides. Third overall went to Doug Hayes rid· ing a CR250 Honda with Mark Crosby powering his Yamaha in for fourth place in the final standings. The Mi~i Expen race was a George Holland benefit as the Suzuki R&D star continues to dominate the SSM Mini races. Holland rode away with both motas and with the kind of style that shows great potential for the future. Troy Blake, another of the R&D whiz kids, kept his RM80 on the gas and took second place in both races while Kawasaki rider Bruce Bunch and Suzuki·mounted Pat Galan battled for third with the nod going to Bunch.
