'The Sierra Club will throw a big party
when dirt bikes become extinct. And
I'll enjoy it all the more because I told
y'all just how it would happen," said
California·Nevada Sierra Club field
representative Russell Shay in an inter·
view with the AMA magazine,
Amen'can Motorcyclist. His theories
make interesting reading, if only for
their comic· relief value in relation to

Cycle News president invents
hybrid tri.ke
LONG BEACH, CAo APR. 7
Almost every five years, Cycle News previews some startling new
invention of which nothing is ever heard again. Candidates for this
'honor are so scarce that wa've hed to go In-houSe this time and produce the hybrid "Humbug:'
The 1980 Humbug runs on eight rechargeable batteries, or gasoline,
or both. It has three wheels and travels 15 miles on 8 charge, or about
the distance from inventor CC's home to the office and beck. On
irregular gasoline, the Humbug performs like a 1954 Volkswagen,
which it was at one time. CC uses the rear engine to commute between Long Beach and his Cambria, CA test track at freeway speeds.
When both accelerators are floored, seys the Inventor, "It passes
everything up Cherry hill but an XS11:' He adds, "It also passes up gas
stations:'
