Gearin' up The fun thing about rea ing quizzes in newpapers is that sooner or later they publish a question to which they don't know the answer. Case in point: question 14 of the Mar. 19 Cycle News "Motorcycle nutsand-bolts quiz." Of course, Ray Hill can be excused for missing it; he didn't even give himself a correct answer among the four choices. If he hasn't figured out what's wrong with his answer yet. have him try to increase his bike's speed about six times in sucession. Then ask Chris 'Economaki to interview him as to the results. BRENT MEEKER Oxnard, CA Question 14 of the quiz asked how to increase the top speed of a bike when all you can do is change the rear sprocket'. Hill's an.rwer - to change to a sprocket With fewer teeth - is correct within the scope of the question. Team Yamaha used that basic gearing principle. along with raising the number of teeth on the countershaft sprocket, to increase the top speed of their SCORE Parker 400 and Mexicali 250 winning YZ 465s toabout 115 mph . .. Editor. 01' Russ sez fight AS 2914 Almost as soon as the "Deepthroat" column on A.B_ 2914 hit the streets. this office began receiving calls from members asking what to do about the bill. Let me state categorically that M.O.R.E. is prepared to fight this bill with every resource available. You can be assured that 01' Russ will be there testifying against this outrage of a bill if it ever gets a committee hearing. I stress the IF, because if everyone who reads this publication will pick up the phone and contact his State Senator and State Assemblyman and tell them that this is a very bad bill, my prediction is that Gage will drop the bill before it ever gets heard. Assemblyman Hayes informs me that he is going to make it easy for everyone to protest this bill. Somewhere in the current issue, there is an ad with a letter that readers can sign and return to Hayes. He in tum will see to it that a copy gets to your individual Assemblyman and Senator. This is important. please take the time to write. or clip the letter in this issue and return it to Assemblyman Hayes. If we lose the entire Green Stickie Fund and you never sent your letter. who will you have to blame? Think about it. RUSS SANFORD President. Motorcycle Owners, Riders and Enthusiasts TI,!,e's almost up The California Desert closes in 50 days. I know that sounds absurd; but it is possible. as far as d~rt racing and trail riding are concerned. You have until May 15 to comment to BLM on their plans for your d~rt. It is imperative that you make your views and desires known. Unfortunately the volume and complexity of the D~rt Plan draft make your task very difficult. Might I make a suggestion? 1. Urge adoption of the "use alterternative" for Recreation and Motor Vehicle Use. 2. Try to comment in detail on how the various alternatives will affect the areas you use for riding. State how you want to see these areas managed. 5. Urge that provisions be made in the final plan to guarantee the continuance of long-course d~rt racing. Special provisions should be made to maintain the routes of the B-to-V and Check Chase courses. at least. 4. Urge that provisions be made to open land adjacent to utility corridors for trail riding and racing. 5. Make all comments in writing. even if you attend the plan meetings. If you disagree with the plan and feel that its major effect will be to destroy desert racing and trail riding. then you should also: I. Support Bob Hayes' land management proposals. Let your state Senator and Assemblyman know how you feel. 2. Write your Congressman and Senators. Urge them to begin an investigation into BLM's activities in California_ 5_Join CORVA and support the Duck. Th~ people are fighting hard for you and need your help. THUMPER FREAK As you are aware. the Special Use Permit for the May II Cal Poly Penguin's 50th Annual Hi-Mountain Enduro has been appealed by the Santa Lucia chapter of the Sierra Club. The Cal Poly Penguins have withheld information until now, in order to gather more facts to present to the motorcycling public. On Mar. 15. an official appeal was made by the Sierra Club to revoke the Special Use Permit for the Hi-Mountain Enduro. In support of their appeal, the Sierra Club was to supply the Forest Service with a delailed statement within 15 days of the appeal notice. This means that the detailed statement was due at the Forest Service by Mar_ 51. This detailed statement did not reach the Forest Service until Apr. 2. two days after the deadline. Since their response did not meet the deadline. their appeal has been denied by the Forest Service. Since the detailed statement was not presented to the Foresl Service during the appeal period. and since the appeal has been denied by the Forest Service, the Sierra Club cannot appeal the enduro any further through the Forest Service_ In order for the Sierra Club to take any further action, they must go through the court system. It should be noted that the Sierra Club will appeal the permit as far as possible. and may then take court action if the race is not stopped. For now. the Hi-Mountain Enduro is going on as planned for the May II date_ The event could be postponed if the Sierra Club won some kind of court action against the Cal Poly Penguins. In case there is a court battle, the Legal Defense, Task Force of District 57 will supply the Cal Poly Penguins with the same lawyers that handled the Red Garter Enduro_ Rob Rasor, AMA Associate Director of Government Relations, is also worlting with the Cal Poly Penguins and the Forest Service to save the Hi-Mountain Enduro. In the meantime, the Cal Poly Penguins need to gather support for their enduro_ This support will come from entries received for the Hi-Mountain Enduro, and from letters written to concerned parties involved with the Special Use Permit. If anyone can afford the time, a letter supporting the Hi-Mountain Enduro, written to one of the following people, will help our fight against the Sierra Club.
