did their best to ignore the adverse
weather conditions as they attacked
the well·groomed course, which included some new rough sections on the
east side..
Kyle Pearson led the IOOcc class off
the line in the first moto of the
program. David Green joined him
during the first lap and they put quite
a distance on the pack as their battle
pursued. After a pass and a repass in
two consecutive turns, things really
began to wann up. The next lap Green
clipped Pearson with his front tire and
fell. He quickly restarted and within
one lap caught up and passed Pearson
for the lead for good. Mark Wells took
third, Jim Anheim claimed fourth and
Frank Reno moved up 10 fifth.
Corey Cope, who finished way down
in the first moto results due to bike
problems, passed both Green and Pear·
son early in the second molO to win it
in the end. Pearson held on to second
throughout the moto ahead of Green
to win the overall for the day. Green
tallied a 1-3 score fot second while
Anheim came in with a paiT of fourths
for thi rd overa II .
Russell Woodson, Danny Heller and
Wayne Lanning led the I 25cc Juniors
at the start of their moto. On the
second lap, R. Pickering blitzed past
them all and looked like he would run
away with it. On the sixth lap he fell
and found himself behind Heller and
new leader John Felr.as. Pickering then
got by Heller who finished third ahead
of Curt Jones and Woodson.
In the second moto the first five
places never changed. Pickering won it
and the overall, Jones took second for
second overall and Heller finished
third for third overall.
Kurt Johnston, last year's Number
One KMSA 125cc Senior, smoked the
troops in both motos of their race.
Early leader Craig Robl endoed hard
in some deep whoops halfway into the
first lap. Though not seriously hurt, it
ended his riding for the rest of the day.
Johnston passed Jeff Bargall the next
lap for the lead and nevet IooIted back.
Bargall, Duane Burne and Mike
WaIlter finished second through fourth.
Johnston. BargaU and WlIlker ~-
the whole second moto in positions one,
two and three. Todd Davis, Burney
and Mitch Rorabaugh raced among
themselves, however, before finishing
fourth through sixth.
Mark Wells and Joe Beinke were the
only Mini Seniors entered in the Mini
race. Wells won the first moto and was
guaranteed victory the second time
around when Reinke dropped out early.
. The Mini Junior event was won
handily by Jonathan Pancake on his
Yamaha. Roddy Dill led the first lap
of the first moto before being passed
by Pancake and Walter Schultz. Schultz
dropped back and finally out with bike
problems as Pancake went on to win
ahead of Dill, Todd Wellman and
Johnny Salida. The order remained
the same throughout the second moto
for all the riders.
KMSA Number One Cun Eveleigh
provided the excitement in the 250cc
Junior class as he worked his way up
from a last· place start to win the first
moto. Randy George rode his Suzuki
into second at the checkered after a
third-place stan. Don Paulson and
Mark Kumle followed in third and
fourth. Gary Yager, who was an early
leader on a borrowed Yamaha, dropped
out on the fourth lap for unknown
reasons.
A crash by Paulson early in the
second moto turned the lead over to
Eveleigh. Yager took advantage of the
situation likewise to- nab second place.
Paulson recovered midway through
the moto to pass George for third and
claim second overall behind Eveleigh.
Norton racer J.D. Sanderson slOle
the show in the 250cc Senior class by
winning both motos wire-to-wire by
large margins. Dan Hoover worked his
way into second each time fOT second
overall ahead of Tom Kubl and Jl!5se
Wessels who tied on overall points.
Although Terry Deitz and Jerry Jones
fought it out in each moto of the Open
Juniors, Deitz held the winning position
on the final few laps. Tom Bohl and
Greg Peterson repeated their third and
fourth scores in each moto.
Local rider Dan Hoover won each of
the Open Senior mOlOS. His main
worry was Yamaha-mounted Gary
Gibbs who, along with Hoover, would
pull away from the pack in each moto
despite both getting poor starts. Third
overall for the day behind Gibbs was
David Emerick from Hoxie.
Phillipsburg's next race will be April
6, the first race of the Coors Midwest
Motocross Championship.
