In the Vets class, Duane Spence chalked up an impressive victory as the competition was fierce. Last week's winner, Bill Calicura, was a favorite to repeat, but crashed in the early going and never got back in the running. Jim Harbauer crashed exiting the right hander and retired as Spence stretched his lead on the pack. Mike Underhill recovered from a poor start and moved into second but couldn't catch the flying Spence. Steve Marvsi! was third, David Lehman fourth. Results 5Occ: 1. D. Delay ISuz); 2. O. Lelf IYam). Key right in tune at Mabton Dunes By The Squisher MABTON, WA, MAR. 9 The second race of the Spring Series at Mabton Dunes hosted nearly 200 riders on a new course. A double jump was added with a large mud hole in the middle. Several of the Mini riders found out just how deep the water was during practice. A new camel jump just past the finish jump shot riders straight into the air with a tricky landing into soft sand. Craig Rowley (Yam) made it look easy as he won both motos of the 125cc Intermediate class by a mile. This was Craig's first overaU win but he looks all set to jump up to Pro soon. Kyle Fast (Yam) worked his way up to third in the first moto behind Craig Stanaway (Yam) only to fall on the last lap and let David Perez (Suz) take third. Kyle came back strong in the second moto to take second and also second overaU. Third went to Mike Tonack (Suz) with consistent 5-5 placings. Duane Marker (Suz) shot into the lead of the first 250cc Pro moto foUowed by Gilbert Knotts (Yam), Brett Tremblay (Suz) ·and Art Key (Hus). Marker disa.ppeared into the sunset as Key moved up to battle Trembley for . second. A. faU by Brett let Art move ' .into ~nd and although. he cloeed'at . the finish;8ren couId not regain sec-:' ond. Rod Ostriem (Hon) rode to a steady fourth with Jeff Shober (Yam) next. A bad start in the second moto and a crash in the mud hole on the second lap put Marker out of the running in the second moto. Duane kept riding and amazingly finished the moto high enough for third overaU despite a suspected broken leg. Dale Barker (Yam) led the second moto from wire to wire. Key chaUenged for the lead several times but played it cool with a second to give him the overall win. The first two riders were the only guys to complete all 14 laps as they lapped everyone up to third place. Ostriem took the second place money with a third in the second moto and Marker was third overall. Jeff Anderson (Yam) sprinted into the lead of the first 125cc Pro moto but gradually faded back. Dennis Ostriem (Suz) gassed it into the lead only to fall and give the win to Marker (Suz) when he fell on the last lap. Kenny New (Kaw) held a brief lead in the second moto but Ostriem was unstoppable today as he blitzed into the lead and on to victory. Marker had to slow way down when he broke off his footpeg when landing off the camel jump. Second overaU went to New with Leon McDonald (Yam) third. The 250cc Intermediate class was dominated by Kevin Berry (Kaw) as he easily won the first moto and then fell in the second moto but still took the win. Brad Leslie (Suz) and Kevin Bise (Yam) argued over second place with Bise's superior conditioning giving him the edge for second overall. Kevin is a desert racer at heart and he says these short I5·minute motos don't even get him warmed up. Mabton will take a week off now so everyone can attend the Dealer's Challenge and then they will be running every week for seven more races. • S6,DOO IN CONTINGENCY AWARDS PLUS CHAMPIONSHIP JACKETS EVERY WED TE FACTORY 1.t, 2nd, 3rd,4th,5th TOUACH se••on Trophle.
