o 00 (j) IAbove) Chuck Sun 163) pulled away from Denny laPorte end finished third on Frldey. (Below) Seturdey. Belland Werren Reid (8) battled for second. To the vietor go the spoils. Mike Bell has 8 16-point Serlesleed, Glover began to experience sticking throttle problems. Passing lapped riders at this point just made the Yamaha more difficult to control and Glover was forced to allow Bell to pull away with an increasing lead the reo maining distance to the finish line. The only position changes behind the leaders belonged to the Kawasaki duo of Warren Reid and Jeff Ward, who were able to intimidate 500cc National Champion Danny LaPorte and his works Suzuki back to sixth place, then Honda's Chuck Sun held the Big K pair off the rest of the race to take third. A 'disappointment to the highly partisan crowd of Texans were Steve Wise in seventh and Kent Howerton in 11th. The pair of top series runners could do nothing during the race to improve their positions off the start. Saturday Fans packed into the Astrodome 50,000 strong on Saturday night for the weekend's final battle. Once again the qualifying motos served up the fastest rider who would go on to dominate the evening's main ~nt. Team Yamaha's Brae Glover simpley ran off and left everyone else behind in his qualifier with a blistering 10·lap time of 8 min., 47 sec.. some four seconds faster then the next quickest qualifying moto headed by teammate Mike Bell. The other two qualifiers went to Honda stars Donnie Hansen and Chuck Sun. Making the feature by the knobs of his front tire was Donnie Cantaloupi, winner of the consolation moto. Yamaha's Marty Tripes was never close to running at competitive speed and was dead last in every start, despite riding a bike identical to Bell and Glover's. Tripes was never really able to pass even local riders in the qualifier, semi or consolation races. In the pits afterwards, Tripes showed his disappointment as he broke into tears. Only the works Honda RCs matched the acceleration of the Yamaha OWs off the starting line at the beginning of the feature. Jim Gibson slid his Honda Pro· Link through turn one ahead of Glover. Reid, Bell, Sun. Wise, Hower· ton, Burgett. Barnett and PDQ's Arlo Englund. Gibson's charge at the front came to an end when he bailed off on the second lap. Glover swooped past and instantly began putting distance be· tween himself and the snarling pack at the rate of a second per lap. As Glover increased his lead, announcer Larry Huffman drew the crowd's attention to the battle between Bell and Reid for second. "It took me a long time to get within striking distance of Reid. He was really going fast. Finally' got him going over the double jumps and passed him on the uphill of the tunnel jump," said Bell. '" just kept making mistakes," said Reid. '1 got back by Mike, again, but then knocked my foot off the peg in a turn and he passed me again." "It was the same spot , passed him the first time," added Bell. It was a wild battle all the way to the nag with Bell and Reid usually side· by·side. sharing the same berm in the same turn at the same time. "My clutch lever was again~t his ribs the whole way around the last run to the finish," said Reid who had to settle for third by the margin of a wheel. '" just have to get the holeshot." said Glover on the line before the start. And when he did, 'with the exception of Gibson's first lap blast. the race was his. Behind Glover, Bell and Reid, there was a heated battle for fourth place between Chuck Sun, Steve Wise, and Kent Howerton. Though he had been having a hell of a time all weekend trying to dial in the suspension of his RH Suzuki, and was still far from happy with it, Howerton did managed to move into fourth ahead of Sun by the finish as fellow Texan Wise dropped off the pace with a twisted knee. Mark Barnett came out ahead of the battle for sixth place with Suzuki teammate Denny LaPorte and Brian Myerscough. • Results FRIDAY: 1. Milte Bell (Yaml: 2. Broc GloIIer !Yom): 3. Chuck Sun IHanI: 4.
