AMA Supercross Series: Rounds six-seven
Team Yamaha rocks the 'Dome
By Jim Gianatsis
HOUSTON, TX, MAR. 14-15
It was a massive explosion
an incredible
earth-rocking shake whi~h shook the Astrodome
to its very foundations and left the opposition
in Pace Management's Mr, PiBB Supercross
fearful in the wake. The aftershock will be felt· across the

the opening race of the outdoor AMA
125/250cc MX Nationals, and then
perhaps all the way throughout the
series to the garnering of a new pair of
National Championship titles.
The lanky moto wa.rriors of Team
Yamaha,. perspiration glistening off
the exposed portions of rock hard
muscle not hidden by protective armor
plating of plastic, nylon and le.ather,
dominated rounds six and seven of the
1980 Supercross Series in both nights
of racing inside Houston's Astrodome.
Mike Bell and Broc Glover used
their works OW 40·80 Yamahas to
bury the opposition inside the 'Dome.
Only Kawasaki's Warren Reid and
Honda's Chuck Sun kept their heads in
breathable air above the flying roosts
of the .Team Y:una ha duo.. An? if man·
handhng a pair of hyperkmetlc, warpspeed works racers. to victory wasn't
enough. Bell and Glover tipped their
helmets to one another along the way
after they took turns finishing first and
second each night.
"We both turned in identical per·
formances and won identical amounts
of money," said Friday night's runner·
up and Saturday's winner, Brae Glover.
On Friday night, it was Bell who set
fastest qualifying time and then went
on to dominate the feature while Glover
played back-up all the way. On Satur·
day night they reversed their roles with
Glover the quickest and Bell following.
Their domination of the weekend's
events and much of the SupercroS$
Series thus far, with Bell holding the
overall points lead. has put a look of
disappointment on the faces of orne of
the expected front-runners, and leaves
Bell and Glover as the top favorites to
dominate at next week's Nationals.
In the 250cc class, it has to be Bell
as a safe bet since his Supercross OW·
40 is also his well-proven National
bike. while the riders at Honda and
Suzuki have yet to even test ride their
new monoshockers which are in trans·
it from Japan. And Broc Glover's
domination of the 125cc class for the
fourth straight year is nearly a fore·
gone conclusion.

A crowd of approximately 12,000

opening evening's race.
