Rhyan stayed calm under pressure and held his lines. At the checkers he was still in the runner-up position behind Locey. Staten settled for third with McKenna fourth and Tamietti fifth. Locey again timed the gate right and trenched into the lead at the start of the second moto. Tarnietti followed with Rhyan third and Suzuki rider Matt Tedder fourth. Staten ran midpack with a base gasket problem and no power. As his Yamaha heated up it regained many of its ponies and Staten quickly charged up to futh. Rhyan fell, letting McKenna into third as Staten closed on the leaders. McKenna and Rhyan both closed on Tamietti, and Staten followed. Locey knew he could win the series if he held the lead and Rhyan fmished in third. But Staten would win if he passed Rhyan. And Rhyan would take the title if he finished second but ahead of Staten, The crowd went wild as Rhyan pushed his way past Tamietti with Staten following to keep the presSUTeon. The last lap flag came out, and Rhyan nearly bobbled in the tree turn's deep ruts but crossed the finish line ahead of an exhausted Staten. "I'm going to sleep in the van on the way home," explained Rex, "I had to drive down from Oakland last night, ride two classes and replace my base gasket between motos'" Locey took the overall with Rhyan second followed by McKenna" Staten, and Tarnietti. Rhyan was grinning from ear to ear as he picked up his series award plaque. "We would have had the series wrapped up if my engine hadn't blown at Madera, but I'm real happy to win.
