Speaking of the Colemans, Lance's twin brother Larry continued his statewide dotnination of the l!50cc Intermediate class with another overall win. He is the current point leader in this class. Scott Perry (Yam) and "Wailin'" Wayne Snow (Suz) took the place and show positions. Two other brothen dominated their class by taking the top two trophies. Jim and Bob Beink.ter piloted their Yarnahas to first and second place in the first division of the 125cc Junion. Jim took second in the fint moto, but in the one that counts the most, he won. Brother Bob tallied 5·2. Fint moto winner Shane Guernsey (Yam) could only muster a sixth in the final, relegating him to third in the overall standinK!. In the minis, George Holland pow' ered his R&D Racing Engines-sponsored Suzuki to the class win in the Modified 12 yean and over Expert class. The R&D bikes run so healthy, they sound like 125s. Bobby Moore aced the 12 and over Intermediates on his Pro·Trac Trailen YZ and Jason Prater scored the Junior brass. In the II and under classes, Mark Lewis (Yam) and Ty?on Vohland (Yam) took home the fint place brass and contingencies. Vohland just ran off from the rest of the Intermediates and Lewis, after blowing up two bikes, borrowed a YZ from his friend Kevin Snider, went out and scored a 1·2 tally for the Junior win. Another beautiful ride was put in by Debby Jamenon on her husband Bill's 250cc Maico which she piloted to the Women's Division win. Interestingly enough, Debby was considering quit· ting racing for a while to regroup her abilities and play with ber new Ponebe 911. Now maybe she'll hang around and race the Maico some more and not the Ponehe. Nice ride, Deb. Promoters Gary and Betty Lewis went all out and supplied a primo racing surface for the riders, aided by the rest of the crack No· Name Promotions crew. The track was both chal· lenging and safe, in keeping with No· Name's past performance. The series returns to southern California at famed Carlsbad Raceway on February 9 and the finale is at sandy Indian Dunes. o co 0') Results Brothers shine in Golden State Series round 5 By Mike Malone SACRAMENTO, CA, FEB. 2 The Can-Am/CMC Golden State Series made its swing to nonhern California at Sacramento's Prairie City OHV Park and over 400 .. 38 motocrossen, including central and southern California riden, made the trek to race on a track designed by Brad Lackey for trophies, thousands of contingency prizes and valuable series points. Some of the best racing was in the small· bore c1asles. In division one of the U5cc Intermediates. Gary Hutto (Kaw) pulled a strong hoIeshot in the fint moto and led for ~ laps around tbel hilly, tacky course before being passed by Dale Pirlo. He retained his lead until the second to last lap when Hutto found some extra ponies in his KX and repassed for the lead. Half· way through the last lap, Hutto fell, handing Pirlo the lead and moto win. Hutto recovered to take fourth. Cory Cantaloupi and Ed Minton put on inspired rides from the back of the pack to take second and third. The second moto holeshot went to Ed Minton on his shiny new YZ125. Thr smallest Intermediate on the track, Rick Ryan (Suz), blew by to claim the lead and the moto win. Minton, after his excellent ride in the fint moto, had his chain come off which dropped him out of the top three placings. Lance Coleman roosted his Husky in for sec· ond ~d Allen Silhanek, a former mini star, took. third. Ryan took the overall with a 5·1 tally, followed by Gary Hutto on his Kawasalti and Coleman PEE WEE CYCLES: 1. Rene V_ (Suzl; 2. Justin Satguta ISuzl; 3. Pol Heoly (R&DI. JR CYCLE5-JR: 1. Don _ McCormick and Link endure at Crouup By Jan Newman BEND, OR, FEB. 5 Crossup Raceway planned this Team Endurance Race as a trial balloon to see how much interest there would be in reopening the track. The balloon flewl It's no secret that the closure of Crossup over the past few months was due to anum· ber of problems, not the least of which was low· turnout. A good turnout and the general attitude today reflected the appreciation of the riders for the chance to ride Oregon's best winter track again. Some of the riders may not know that all those fatniliar faces they saw scoring, starting, etc. cared enough to donate their time for the day. With that kind of cheap help it's not surprising the scoring on the first moto got out of handl I'm only kidding and I'm getting ahead of the events. The weather was super and so w the track - mostly. There were just a couple of mudholes brought on by bit of rain and the thawing of th ground after temperatures whic dropped as low as ·15· F the previ week. The more the sun warmed tb morning air, the deeper the mu became. The team rules were simple. Tw riders on one or two bikes rode two and·a·half hour motos. The Heavy weights were 250cc and over with al others in the Lightweight class. Th teams switched riders at their discre tion at the start line. Each team w required to have the same number 0 bikes and helmets, consequently ther were a lot of duct tape and black ta numbers. The Heavyweights started first a by the end of the first lap some of makeshift numbers were either unread able or gone entirely. After severa laps just about every blob of mud tha went by could .be recognized by som means (a ripped jersey, red helmet whatever) but then they started sWitch ing riden and bikes. Bad just go worse as the 90 minutes went by. When it all ended there was som suspicion that the team of Joe McCor mick (Hus) and Dave Link. (Suz) ha won but there was absolutely no way t score it. It was Dale Demaris (w team probably finished pretty we who suggested the flTSt moto thrown out and that scoring be d on the second moto only. Indicative the mellow attitude of the whole da no one complained.. . Ron Long (KTM) got the scratch i the second moto but by the second Ia the Link/McCormick team led th way and for 49 laps they were 0 headed three times - once again b Long, once by the team of Mitch Kir patrick and Dave Shepard (Hus) an once by Tracy Lantz and Rick Her (Mai). All remained top finishen cept Long and his Old Timer part Jim Newman (Yam), who just wasn up to the pace set by those you whipper·snappers. . When the Lightweights set out
