Bryan "Boom Boom" Abernathy (Yam) took on all comers in Mini Senior action. Abernathy was flawless as he slipped away early in both rounds to win with ease. Foytik was shadowed all morning long by Robbie Wilson (Suz) who looked for a mistake that neve.r came. Wilson recovered from a poor start in round one, but in round two with a good start, the results were the same: Foytik then Wilson with Mark Terry following the pair of speedsters each time for third. Due to a large number of entrants. the 250cc Novice class was split into two divisions with some exciting racing taking place with every drop of the starting gate. In division one, Rodger Schellenberger (Yam) came out on top with "Jumpin'" Jeff Morris (Suz) second after coming from behind to win round two. In division two, Jacyce McMahon (KTM) came back from a tough first round to win the second on the fast, sandy circuit. Jimmy Henzler (Suz) was second after battling with third place finisher Wayne Carnes (Suz) in round two. The afternoon practice was crowded with more riders than usual "testing" Texas turf. The 125cc Intermediate class was proof of the large turnout as it was split into two divisions also. "Terrible" Tim Butler (Yam) flew his new bike to consecutive victories in division one. After disposing of early leader Obie Jones (Hon), Butler took control on the second lap with Jones battling Ted Johnson (Suz). At the end of round one, Butler held a safe lead with Jones second and Johnson in his shadow. In round two, Butler took over on lap one with Jones and Rodney Wigginton (Hon) in hot pursuit. By the moto's end, Butler was gone with Wigginton controlling the second slot and Jones dropping to third. First moto threat Johnson took a soil sample • -o _ ••'I' that dropped him to tenth in round two and seventh overall. The 125cc Pros diced for dough next with Mel Newman (Suz) setting the pace after early leader Davey Jones (Suz) took a Texas Turf Test in a comer. Jones recovered for second with Mike Brownlee (Su.z) and Keith Davis (Hon) in pursuit. By the mota's end, Newman was by himself with Jones an easy second and Brownlee holding on for third. In round two, Darren "Crash" Rhoten (Han) spun out while running second behind Jones. Newman nailed Rhoten before he could get underway. Rhoten continued with Newman remounting only to fall again. By this time, Jones was by himself as Rhoten continued in fine form for second. Kirk Dillon (Yam) rounded out the top three with a nice come-from·behind ride in round two. Overall it was Jones, Newman, Dillon, Shan Niday (Kaw) and Davis. In 250cc Pro action, Mike "Dr. 1" Jones (C·A) came out on top after two action-filled races. Rick French (Yam) led at the drop of the gate though "Dr. 1" took the lead on the third lap as French faded. Nick Cordova (Hon) slipped in a tum after Kirk Spencer (Yam), who spun in the first tum, had charged through the pack to within three seconds of Jones. Spencer slowed suddenly with mechanical problems as Robbie Pannell (Bul) took over second from Cordova. The mota ended with Jones winning easily, Pannell holding off Cordova for second and Tom Holtan (Han) earning fourth. French pulled the holeshot again in round two with Nick "The Stick" Cordova blowing by on the first lap. Cordova went untouched after lap one with the "Dr." coming back for second. French held on to third as Pannell managed a founh. Overall it was "Dr. 1". "The Stick", Pannell and French. David Banton (Yam) bumped, bounced and boogied his way to the overall win in the Open Intermediate action. Banton and Gary Mason (KTM) had their own race until Mason, after finishing second in'round one, did a special din test that was preceded by a "Banton Bump". Banton rode on to victory as Eric Berg (Yam) moved to second with Mason dropping to third after his second mota soil sample. Open Pro action topped off the day's racing as Darren Rhoten (Hon) devastated the competition. Rhoten was untouchable as he went wire to wire in both rounds. In round one, Monte Anderson (Yam) played "me and my shadow" as he followed the talented Rhote who slipped away by the end. In round two it was Kirk Spencer (Yam) playing shadow as Anderson did a brake test in tum two that resulted in a close encounter with the Texas turf.
