It seems that some of the allegations of foot-dragging by the Department of Parks and Recreation which appeared in the last issue of this column hit home. Parks Director Russ Cahill returned to us a scathing letter blaming the funny fund transfers on the legislature, not the Parks Department. Cahill also responded to our question about why Carnagie Cycle Park was acquired by the State and then closed to the publ'ic. Rather than try to respond to Cahill this indefensible charge, decided to open the cycle park with department personnel. Whatever his motives, we wholeheartedly agree with the results. This is the good riding season at Carnagie, and it would have been a shame to have lost most of the season while the bureaucrats tried to decide who should run the facility. Let's hope that this action by Cahill and the Parks Department is a harbinger of better things to come in the 19805. Sometime during the first or second week of the legislative session Assemblyman (sometimes motorcycle racer) Bob Hayes will attempt to override the Governor's veto of A.B. 1407. the Sagebrush Rebellion bill, which if passed becomes the first step in eventually kicking the BLM out of California. Deepthroat will ride to Sacramento that day to cover the details first hand. We will provide a list of those senalOrs and assemblymen who supported (the good guys) and who opposed (the bad guys) Hayes' override attempt. There is still time to contact your state assemblyman and senator and tell him to support Assemblyman Hayes' attempt to override A.B. 1407. Tell him that you are going to watch the outcome of this measure and that his/her vote will greatly influence your vote in November. You. can look in the State Government section of your phone book to find out who your assemblyman and senator are, and how to reach their office by telephone. There is no time to waste. Do it fWW! Speaking of BLM, the long awaited Wilderness Study decisions were announced this week. At first blush. it looks like the decision is not as terrible as it might have been, although it definitely ain't good. AMA, NOC, and some of the other off road groups are going to have to prepare to make intensive organized "field evaluations" of many of the proposed Wilderness Study areas. It's either we do it. or we take their word for what is and isn't in those areas. Deepthroat wonders if anyone else noticed that our riding Assemblyman, Bob Hayes went racing late last year. and actually won his class. Looks like riding herd on reluctant bureaucrats might actually be good training for racing in the dez. We also heard a rumor at the SoCal New Years party that a new fowl appeared on the scene. Others at that party assured us that the "Phantom Duck of the Boulevard" is just a once a year fairwrather occurance. C.N. Deepthroat Save Gas - Save Money Subscribe, ~e C1eliver!
