Motorcyclists will still be allowed to ride on existing ways and trails through Wilderness Study Areas, according to the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Interim Management Policy. The policy, a set of management guidelines for the 57 million acres of public land under wilderness review, will remain at least until Congress makes the final decision on whether the land will become pan of the National Wilderness System. This decision will be made by October, 1991, a deadline set in the Federal Land Policy and Management Ac.t of 1976. The policy also states, "Organized off-road vehicle events may be allowed to pass through areas under wilderness review on existing ways and trails, so long as the BLM has detennined. that such use satisfied the nonimpairment criteria I" Nonimpairment criteria are rules to protect land under consideration for wilderness designation from harm. The policy prohibits assembly areas, stan or finish lines, and gasoline pit stops.
