Staten stomps CoronaMX By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, DEC. 14 Yamaha's Rex Staten captured the honor of being the hottest rider at Corona Raceway in the track's last motocross event of the '70s. A strong turnout of ridersmade it to the race track for the race, after which the track will shut down over the holidays to reopen on Jan. II, 1980. Staten watched the year and the decade go out in style from the top of the 250cc Pro class. The first holeshot went to him and his white Yamaha, but Juan Benavidez (C-A) was right behind. Benavidez has really been coming on strong lately at Corona and Staten wasn't able to shake him in the early ~aps. But while trying to pull alongsIde the leader in a section of stadium style whoops, Ben!1videz got out of shape and went down. This gave a distant second place to John Greenway (DC Hon). Benavidez was all the back back in fifth place, but in a few laps he had caught fourth place Ted Hoy! (Yam) and closed on Eric MacCracken (Yam) for third. MacCracken, in tum, had closed on Greenway and on the sixth lap, he took control of second. Benavidez also managed to pass Greenway and at the finish line it was Staten, MacCracken. Benavidez, Greenway and Bill Chapin. Once again the holeshot went to Staten in round two, but this time it took Benavidez a little time to move into second. That time was all Staten needed to pull into a strong lead and the rest of the race was like a parade. Staten was firmly in control all the way with Benavidez second, MacCracken third., and Keith Williamson (Yam) fourth. The only race was for fifth place where Greenway edged out Hoyt after Gary Jones (Amx) dropped out of the race. In the ll!5cc Pro class, Rick Jackson (Suz) took the first mota, but DNF the second round. Andy Northrup (Suz) was the overall winner with his 3-1 score over Craig Dale's 2-3 and Troy Lee's 5-2. Upland High took this round of HSMX with five wins. In the 175cc and ll!5cc Senior classes it was Pat Weber on top while Mike Schexnyder took both the 125 and 175cc Intermediate c1asaes. Bill McCarter also ~rried the Upla':ld banner to victory 10 the 10Ckc SeDlor class. Coming in second was North High with two wins courtesy of D.D. Ashley and Jim McIntosh.
